In 2023, the studio known as Volition, once responsible for Saints Row, had been working on a concept for a Harry Potter video game. Now, initial insights and visuals from this long-hidden project are being revealed.
GamesRadar gained insights about a game and viewed its depictions at The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York not long ago. The article detailed how developers from Volition, who were avid fans of the books, put together a demo for a Harry Potter game as early as 1999. Since the first movie didn’t release until 2001, these creators came up with their own concepts regarding some character appearances. It is also important to note that during this time, Volition was recognized as Parallax Software Corporation.
In the demonstration, Hagrid and Harry Potter are shown strolling through a cobblestone region, allowing players to alternate between the two characters within a top-down role-playing game format. In a pitch meeting, executives from the game company, some adorned in robes and accompanied by owls, appeared as part of an attempt to secure the rights, suggestively hinting at their affiliation or strategy.
In the end, it was Electronic Arts who secured the Harry Potter game rights, following an unsuccessful attempt by Volition. Over time, EA released many games based on the movies.
2023 saw the highly popular debut of Hogwarts Legacy, the latest Harry Potter video game. It topped charts as the year’s best-selling title, outperforming even the newly released Call of Duty game that same year. The following year, Quidditch Champions didn’t fare quite as well, and now, a sequel for Hogwarts Legacy is in development.
The Harry Potter world was brought into being by writer J.K. Rowling, a figure who still plays an active role in the franchise. Consequently, her views on the transgender community have left a lingering shadow over the enchanting saga.
