A man involved in stealing approximately $300,000 worth of Trading Card Game (TCG) merchandise at Gen Con 2023 has been given a sentence. Along with this penalty, he must pay Wizards of the Coast, creators of Magic The Gathering, $27,000 and write an apology letter to the community as part of his repercussions.
At any given year, Gen Con ranks as one of North America’s largest tournaments for Trading Card Games (TCG). It consistently attracts countless card game aficionados who either come to barter or compete. Regrettably, in the year 2023, misfortune occurred prior to the event’s commencement.
On the eve prior to Gen Con 2023’s opening, two individuals were spotted making off with approximately $300,000 worth of TCG merchandise. They were subsequently recognized by the Indiana Police Department, and charges against them have been pending since then.
One individual out of the two has received a sentence. This penalty includes making a substantial financial restitution to those affected and writing a sincere apology letter to the Gen Con community.
Gen Con thief sentenced to pay up and apologize
On August 2, 2023, two men around forty years old, named Thomas Dunbar and Andrew Giaume, were recognized as suspects. They were indicted for grand larceny following their association with a $300,000 burglary case.
As a passionate gamer, I learned from the local officials that a duo cleverly maneuvered a pallet truck to snatch stacks of Magic The Gathering, Pokémon, and Disney Lorcana card packs.

In July 2025, Jaume’s trial is scheduled, but Dunbar’s verdict has already been delivered. To avoid the felony charge initially, he pleaded guilty, resulting in a lower-level theft conviction instead. Essentially, this means that instead of serving two years in prison, he will now be on probation and required to repay restitution.
Dunbar has been instructed to pay an unspecified amount to the president of Pastimes Games, in addition to $27,141 USD to Wizards of the Coast. Furthermore, all items seized during the heist are also supposed to be handed back to Wizards of the Coast.
In addition, Dunbar is required to complete 40 hours of community service and pen a letter of apology to the Gen Con community as well.
Gen Con is satisfied with the resolution of this case and acknowledges the commendable efforts of the convention center security, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), and the Marion County Prosecutor for their diligent work in bringing the offender to justice,” stated David Hoppe, President of Gen Con.
Dunbar has agreed to stay away from the Gen Con event for two years as well.
