What You Really Need to Know:
- World Foundation’s Liam Horne sat down at Consensus 2025 and made a shocking claim: that the fuss about “orb tech” is all a big misunderstanding.
- “Actually, it’s the *complete opposite* of what everyone’s saying!” Horne declared on Wednesday. “World and Altman don’t *own* your data. It literally stays in the orb!”
Ah, the World Network! Known for its (rather *unsettling*) iris-scanning orbs that somehow convince us they’re making our digital identities more secure. Well, Sam Altman’s blockchain baby is back in the headlines, but this time it’s not all about the tech’s potential for a sci-fi dystopia. According to World Foundation Advisor Liam Horne, the whole brouhaha about the orbs is just one big game of misinterpretation. Who knew?
During the grandiose Consensus 2025 panel (who doesn’t love a good conference?), Horne waved away critics like pesky flies: “It’s actually the *complete opposite* of what you’ve all been told,” he said, looking oh-so confident. Apparently, World’s critics have it all wrong—World doesn’t *own* your iris data. It’s all protected, safe and sound. No data escapes the orb. If you ask me, the orb sounds like it has more boundaries than your average ex-boyfriend.
These nifty chrome bowling ball-looking devices (I’m sure they’re meant to inspire awe, not alarm) perform the “proof-of-personhood” task. When a user gazes into the orb, it doesn’t just say “hello, human!” It maps your iris and magically turns that biometric data into a World ID. Voilà, you’re now a verified *real* person, no bots allowed.
But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Some regulators in Europe, Africa, and Asia have raised their eyebrows over the whole “privacy-preserving” thing. After all, who doesn’t love a little government scrutiny? Horne, however, doubled down on his assurances: this system was designed with privacy in mind. *Phew!*
For those of us in the United States, hold on to your hats! The orbs are making their way stateside. This month, the World team announced plans to roll them out in six (count ‘em, six) cities: Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, and San Francisco. No word yet on whether it’ll be just as easy to get your identity verified as it is to get stuck in traffic in those cities.
