How Karate Kid: Legends Finally Unites Daniel, Mr. Han, Cobra Kai and Miyagi’s Legacy

Back in 1984, I found myself utterly captivated by the extraordinary cinematic union of Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita in the groundbreaking film known as “The Karate Kid“. This martial arts masterpiece saw the coming together of Daniel LaRusso, a young karate prodigy, and his enlightened guide, Mr. Miyagi. The film, a fusion of critical acclaim and box office success, played a pivotal role in igniting the passion for martial arts within a new generation. It served as the catalyst for an extended franchise that would endure the test of time and geographical boundaries. Moreover, it significantly contributed to the surge of interest in karate across America, ultimately leading to numerous sequels and a spin-off series.

The original movie series lasted for ten years and brought back both Macchio and Morita in three sequels. In 2010, a remake starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith introduced new characters and followed a similar plotline that was well received. In 2018, Macchio teamed up once more with his former on-screen adversary, William Zabka, in the series Cobra Kai, which ran for six seasons and continued the original storyline. Now, Macchio and Chan are set to blend their karate worlds in the upcoming sixth film, Karate Kid: Legends, as fans eagerly await the iconic characters’ collision.

‘Karate Kid: Legends’ Introduces an Exciting New Chapter

In “Karate Kid: Legends,” a fresh installment of the legendary Miyagi-Do narrative, Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Han will collaborate, blending their martial arts wisdom to mentor kung fu prodigy Li Fong (Ben Wang) in his upcoming karate tournament. As per Ralph Macchio, this eagerly anticipated sequel unfolds three years after the events of “Cobra Kai,” with the narrative from the hit series serving as a precursor to the film; Macchio shared with Variety his reasons for participating in “Legends.

…”My focus was primarily on safeguarding the Daniel LaRusso character and determining his location at that specific time, with the ultimate goal of preserving the entire Miyagi-verse legacy. Although they are distinct universes, everything fell into place logically for me. Working with Jackie was an absolute thrill. I initially began this journey on the big screen. Isn’t it amazing to bring it back to the big screen?

Director Jonathan Entwistle spoke to Entertainment Weekly about how the original films, the Jackie Chan-led hit, and the TV series are linked. He explained, “Mr. Han and Mr. Miyagi serve as a bridge to Daniel,” and promised fans that they will all eventually be part of “one united family.” In addition, he shared that he’s had in-depth discussions with the Cobra Kai team about exciting ideas for the movie, aiming to create a cohesive experience across all entities.

In the upcoming series, “Karate Kid: Legends,” Macchio’s character Daniel LaRusso and Chan’s Mr. Han will merge their martial arts know-how, a blend of karate and kung fu, to mentor their promising disciple Li Fong for an upcoming tournament. Li’s bond with Mr. Han resembles the relationship between LaRusso and Mr. Miyagi. In a sneak peek from the trailer, LaRusso hands over his original headband to Li, saying, “two roots, one tree,” symbolizing that he will gain wisdom from both Han’s and Miyagi’s tutelage. Entwistle commented on their shared history:

The Han and Miyagi families share a deep historical bond that stretches far back in time. For anyone interested, this connection can be traced within the narrative of the Karate Kid film series.

LaRusso & Han Team Up To Mold a Karate Hero

Ralph Macchio’s career took off dramatically when he started portraying Daniel LaRusso in 1984, eventually becoming closely associated with this iconic character for years to come. He featured as the character across the initial three movies, evolving from a newbie karate student into a respected teacher throughout the beloved series. Macchio reprised his role as LaRusso after nearly three decades in 2018, joining original co-star William Zabka (Johnny Lawrence) once more in the revival show, which delved back into the Miyagi-Verse storyline.

33 years after the original film, Cobra Kai delves back into the world, offering a fresh take on the story from Johnny’s point of view. It also showcases Daniel LaRusso navigating life without the influence of his late mentor, Mr. Miyagi. In the upcoming series Legends, Daniel shares his combined martial arts skills with Li Fong, but must find common ground with Jackie Chan’s Mr. Han and his unique approach to martial arts and philosophy.

By bringing Mr. Han into the tale called “Legends” and pairing him with LaRusso, it formally links the 2010 spin-off to the Karate Kid universe. This move also pays tribute to the martial arts techniques of both Han and Mr. Miyagi. Furthermore, the world of Cobra Kai will delve deeper in the movie, and Legends will blend the stories of LaRusso, Han, and Miyagi while introducing viewers to a fresh karate protagonist. Macchio played a significant role in assisting director Jonathan Entwistle in merging these three elements together, as the filmmaker shared with Entertainment Weekly.

After many years on the show ‘Cobra Kai’, Ralph is almost there and it seems like small steps have brought him this far. All our discussions found their way into the movie, either through Ralph or through dialogues. We’re thrilled that we’ve expanded the larger universe with this addition.

Karate Kid: Legends will be released on May 30, 2025
