Although John Boyega hasn’t been confirmed for a role in the next Star Wars movie yet, his passion for the galaxy remains undimmed, as evident from his recent interview where he expressed his enthusiasm for Daisy Ridley’s return as Rey. However, it leaves one pondering whether he should indeed be absent from this upcoming adventure. Frankly, I can’t help but wish he’d reprise his role as Finn.
During his appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Boyega was questioned by host Josh Horowitz about knowing Ridley’s comeback and how he learned about it. The star of “Attack the Block” chuckled, confessing that he discovered it just like the fans – online. Yet, he wasn’t taken aback by the news, as he clarified, because he had expected her return.
It seems logical to grow the series with that approach. Above all, I’m eager to verify if this is actually happening, given that there have been several Star Wars projects announced – you know, they’re often in development, but don’t always come to fruition. I’m merely hoping Daisy will get the opportunity to excel within a series she can truly call her own, as a fully-fledged Jedi. I eagerly anticipate witnessing this story unfold. Truthfully, I am thrilled for her.
After “The Rise of Skywalker” concluded the latest Star Wars movie series, the franchise has primarily expanded on Disney+ with various shows. But this is set to shift significantly with Disney’s future cinematic plans for Star Wars, which include a new trilogy and a film featuring Mando and Grogu. John Boyega’s response comes across as genuine and gracious, making it enjoyable to hear an actor who was part of a divisive trilogy express such openness, not only as a professional but also as a fan.
However, he hasn’t been set to come back because his tenure with this team hasn’t been entirely smooth-sailing. In a recent podcast interview (available below), the seasoned actress from “The Woman King” discusses her engagement with fans through watching fan videos and maintaining a personal connection without overt promotion. This is why his omission from the upcoming project seems more poignant.
Finn’s tale remained unresolved in The Rise of Skywalker. In The Force Awakens, he was presented as a significant figure with great potential (perhaps Force-sensitive), courageous, conflicted, and genuinely human. However, by the conclusion of the movie, the chance for his character to develop and progress significantly had been largely overlooked. The actor from Pacific Rim: Uprising openly expressed his dissatisfaction with how characters of color were portrayed, and he didn’t sugarcoat his feelings about it. He criticized the marketing tactics and made it clear that he desired better representation for his character.
In the upcoming story directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, where Rey is rebuilding the Jedi Order, there’s a fantastic chance to tie up loose ends from the sequel trilogy and reintegrate Finn in a significant manner. The timing seems ideal, the plot development makes sense, and John Boyega’s passion for the franchise remains undimmed.
Indeed, I’m quite excited to see Daisy Ridley shine once more. However, if John Boyega’s character Finn isn’t fully embracing his destiny as a Force-sensitive being – a role many fans have long anticipated – it might feel like another chance slipping away. Lucasfilm, I implore you: bring back Boyega! Let him embody the Jedi role, not just as a fan, but as the hero we’ve all been rooting for.
