Previously this year became known that Zack Snyder will collaborate with Dana White and UFC for the MMA film “Brawler”, and what’s even more exciting is his ongoing work on a LAPD action thriller which was revealed last year. At present, it appears these two projects are prioritized over the further development of “Rebel Moon”. However, we finally have some clarity on their progress levels. Luckily, information about their stage of production has been disclosed.
On this week’s Minutemen Podcast, I had the opportunity to chat with Kurt Johnstad, co-writer of Rebel Moon, who graciously discussed several topics. Among these, the films Brawler and the currently untitled LAPD project were brought up. Regarding Snyder’s upcoming UFC film, Johnstad excitedly displayed a completed script copy, hinting at its completion.
The project is complete! We’ve wrapped up our writing. It was simply extraordinary! The same team that worked on ‘Rebel Moon’, which includes Zack Snyder, myself, and Shay Hatten. Incredible! It was a terrific experience. I think they might start filming towards the end of this year or possibly in January. From what I understand, Zack is currently reaching out to actors now, focusing on finding individuals who can convincingly portray professional fighters and athletes. He needs someone with innate talent in this area, or he’ll need to prepare them to be camera-ready. At the moment, he’s immersed in the search process.
It appears that, given it might take approximately six months to train someone without a fighting background, the UFC movie is yet to reach cinemas. However, the script has been completed, so the challenging task begins of arranging all other aspects. Besides White, Snyder is also working on this film with His Excellency Turki Alashikh, the chairperson of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, and the owner of boxing magazine ‘The Ring’.
From the Octagon to the Mean Streets of Los Angeles
Moving on to another topic, Johnstad mentioned Zack Snyder’s upcoming LAPD action thriller for Netflix. Unlike his typical work in fantasy, superheroes, and adventure genres, this film is reportedly Snyder’s first project that will be “grounded” or realistic. Details about the plot are scarce at the moment, but it revolves around an elite LAPD team grappling with the harsh reality of where law intersects with morality. Similar to his UFC movie, it appears we have a wait ahead before we can watch this one.
As a passionate enthusiast, I’m deeply immersed in the creation process for the LAPD movie, alongside my fellow collaborator Zack. We’re nearing the end of our journey, with just about a month left for the final touches on the script. Currently, we find ourselves in the heart of the third act, so once we wrap up this phase of writing, the film will be complete.
Johnstad stated, “It’s unclear which will premiere first: the police action film or the fight movie. Both are unique and thrilling in their own ways. While the police movie offers high-octane action like car chases, the fight film is more about boxing and MMA. Yet, they’ve both been a pleasure to be part of.
We’ll share updates on both UFC and LAPD movies when we get them, but for now, you can watch both halves of Snyder’s “Rebel Moon” on Netflix right away. However, it seems that a Part 3 might not be released any time in the near future.
