When Firebreak: Firebreak is set to debut on June 17, it marks another game joining the Remedy Connected Universe. Given its Control spin-off nature and shared setting within the enigmatic bureaucratic labyrinth called the Oldest House, it’s clear that it will bolster Remedy’s interconnected narrative tapestry akin to Marvel comics. After chatting with the team, we now have a better understanding of how Firebreak will enrich this connected universe.
The game you’re playing, Firebreak: Firebreak, is scheduled for release six years after the events of Control. Similar to the gap between the fictional occurrences and releases of Alan Wake and its sequel, which was around 13 real-life years, the time elapsed between 2019’s Control and 2025’s FBC will follow the same pattern. During this period, the Oldest House has been sealed off, and the Hiss threat hasn’t subsided.
It seems no one has managed to enter the building from outside, and it appears that unfortunate agents who were in the transformative facility on that fateful day have been trapped inside for over five years, dealing with the Hiss threat. For gamers, this means your character will likely run low on conventional supplies, forcing you to come up with creative weapons and equipment for the three-player cooperative game. Despite the lack of cutscenes or extensive backstory, dedicated lore enthusiasts might be curious about what else the game has to offer in terms of information about the RCU. However, don’t worry; according to game director Mike Kayetta, there is still much to discover.
He mentioned that they aimed to reconnect with the [RCU] and share information about this specific era and its inhabitants, and he hinted that a significant amount of the game’s lore would be discovered during loading screens. However, collecting documents within the game for direct viewing is not an immediate feature, but if there’s demand, they might consider it later. For now, they’re focusing on finding suitable spots to incorporate the information instead.
We found loading screens to be useful spots for providing small bits of information. To enhance your experience, we’ll be adding a lot of new lore tidbits through these screens. These snippets will appear randomly, so the more you play, the more intriguing details you’ll encounter. Some of these details might connect to each other or to other game events.
Kayetta mentioned that extra story details will be gradually revealed through the characters’ dialogue, similar to how it’s done in Left 4 Dead. In other words, they decided not to tell the story directly for various reasons, as this approach contradicts the gameplay experience, much like in Left 4 Dead. One of the reasons for this choice is that zombies are well-known entities, allowing players to jump right into the action without needing an extensive introduction […] One of the new features they’re incorporating into the game is voice packs. Each of these voice packs includes a unique script, not just responses like “There’s an enemy over there,” but also idle and narrative-based lines that the characters say.
Currently, our aim is for you to continuously discover fresh elements even after 20 hours of gameplay. These discoveries might seem minor at first, but they accumulate into something larger, deeper, and more captivating over time. If you’re a fan of the game’s lore, you won’t find an epic Alan Wake-style narrative, but we’re not disregarding it either. We’re treating it with utmost seriousness, and Clay [Murphy], who wrote Control, is also involved in developing many aspects related to this.
It’s likely that some elements from FBC: Firebreak, hinting at the future of Control 2, will be hidden within the game for keen-eyed fans to discover. I’m almost certain that we’ll spot the name Chester Bless or The Blessed Organization in some loading screens, if not more. If you’re unfamiliar with this name, a closer look at our previous sneak peek on RCU could provide an interesting exploration for you.
