As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been noticing something for quite some time now – we’re in month ten of the SAG-AFTRA voice actors’ strike. You know those characters you adore in your favorite games? Well, they’re brought to life by real people, and right now, they need our help.
In a recent chat, the legendary voice behind Master Chief, Steve Downes, shared his thoughts on the ongoing debate about AI voice acting, which is playing a significant role in this strike. He’s asking us, the fans, to stand with the actors and show our support for their cause.
In a video on X, Downes clarified to Rebs Gaming that the primary concern behind the ongoing strike revolves around the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI). He emphasized the importance of giving voice actors control over whether or not their voices will be utilized for AI-generated characters, and how those digital representations will be portrayed.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to be honest with you guys, we haven’t been able to crack that issue at all since the strike kicked off last July. So, here’s where you come in – the community that’s shaped Halo into what it is today. We’re calling on each one of you to express your thoughts about this and stand with us in showing support.
We don’t oppose the employment of AI, but rather its improper usage,” Downes clarified, a sentiment echoed by Jen Taylor, the voice behind Cortana.
In this video, we find Steve Downes and Jen Taylor discussing their participation in SAG-AFTRA, where they’re working towards protecting voice actors’ rights regarding AI usage. They encourage Halo fans to show their support by advocating for these specific protections: the right to approve if their voices can be used, and the right to determine how their voices are used in the future.

Veteran voice actress Jennifer Hale recently shared her thoughts on the ongoing strike, emphasizing the significance of the AI-related concerns. Additionally, she provided a unique outlook on the negotiation process, explaining why reaching an accord has proven challenging.
As a passionate gamer looking back at 2016, I remember a lengthy standoff between voice actors unions and video game developers that lasted an entire year and a half. This time around, we’ve made some progress on various matters, but artificial intelligence has become the main stumbling block in our ongoing negotiations. The union, SAG-AFTRA, is currently evaluating a “Last, Best, and Final” deal proposed by game companies, which includes some AI-related compromises. However, it remains to be seen if these concessions will be sufficient to bring an end to the strike we’ve been on for so long.
