Viola Davis’ production company, Ashé Ventures, has teamed up with Maria Farinha Filmes from Brazil for the co-production of “The Girl Who Could Fly.” This collaboration brings together the talents of an esteemed Hollywood actress and a prominent Brazilian film studio.
This collaboration signifies another significant expansion for the swiftly expanding Maria Farinha Filmes, which in 2024 established MFF & Co in Los Angeles. Later, MFF & Co acquired a smaller share in London’s four-time Oscar-nominated Violet Films.
As a dedicated cinephile, I’m thrilled to be part of the MFF & Co family, where groundbreaking projects like “Pegasus,” masterminded by Amit Cohen (“False Flag”) and Ron Leshem (“Euphoria”), are brought to life. The gripping “Fail-Safe,” directed by Joe Berlinger (“Paradise Lost”), also finds its home here. Lastly, the visually stunning “Esperanza,” from Fernando Meirelles (“City of God”), is another feather in our cap. Each project promises a unique cinematic journey that I can’t wait to embark on!
The fictional work, titled “Girl,” draws inspiration from the extraordinary life and unprecedented achievement of Daiane dos Santos, the trailblazing Brazilian gymnast who became the first Brazilian and the first Black woman to claim gold at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.
In her generation, Dos Santos was a standout tumbler, being the initial female gymnast to execute any routine involving double Arabians, specifically half twists followed by double front flips. Notably, two of her floor exercise skills were given unique names – “Dos Santos I” and “Dos Santos II”. This recognition was later echoed only by U.S. gymnast Simone Biles.
I’m excited to share that I’ll be diving into ‘The Girl Who Could Fly,’ a captivating tale about a young Black girl who shattered racial and societal norms to become a renowned gymnastics icon. Her journey is marked by her courageous defiance of the physical, mental, and aesthetic standards of her era.” – A Movie Enthusiast Sharing an Exciting Update
In sophisticated production, “Girl” is penned by Flávia Vieira (from “These Are the Rules,” and the “If My Memory Serves Me Right” podcast) as well as Janaína Tokitaka (of “Mila in the Multiverse,” and “Back to 15”).
As a movie reviewer, I’ve always believed that this production had the potential to captivate audiences worldwide. It’s truly exciting to find myself in agreement with Ashé, who shares this vision, as we embark on this groundbreaking Brazilian co-production. This collaboration promises to be something truly special.
Currently, Brazil is experiencing a unique time where people are yearning for fresh role models. We have the chance to turn this project into an outstanding local example, yet it’s crucial to make it globally significant as well,” emphasized Maurício Mota, a co-producer and partner at Ashé Ventures.
17-year-old Maria Farinha Filmes, a prominent global entertainment company in Latin America, gained international recognition by producing the Amazon-set thriller “Aruanas” for Globo’s video on demand service, Globoplay. This series, which attracted 35 million viewers per episode, was later made available on Netflix. Additionally, their documentary franchise “The Beginning of Life,” which emphasizes early childhood development, was the most viewed Brazilian documentary in 2016 and was launched on Netflix as well.
