Located in Dubai, the sales agency Cercamon has introduced a new label called Vorteks, which encompasses various genres such as horror, sci-fi, thriller, fantasy, dark comedy, and action movies. Managed by David Kwok, who was previously the director of programming for the Tribeca Film Festival’s first 10 editions, Vorteks will release around 8-10 features annually. As a partner at Vorteks, Kwok will oversee acquisitions and sales.
Kwok emphasized that the label’s upcoming projects will particularly highlight fresh and promising artists, mirroring the exciting new talents arising from the music genre scene.
To illustrate, Vorteks’ initial acquisition is the film titled “Ancestral Beasts,” a second feature by Canadian writer-director-producer Riedel (known for “Jackstones”). This film revolves around an Indigenous woman’s struggle with trauma and was one of the highly anticipated projects showcased during the Proof of Concept session at Cannes Frontières Platform on May 17.
Last year, I stepped into a new genre at Cannes by acquiring two intriguing projects: Michael Felker’s sci-fi thriller “Things Will Be Different,” which had its world premiere in the Midnighter section at SXSW, and Stuart Ortiz’s faux documentary horror “Strange Harvest: Occult Murder in the Inland Empire,” which debuted at Fantastic Fest. Both of these captivating films will find a home under our umbrella at Vorteks. Additionally, Kike Narcea’s Spanish-language actioner “I’ll Crush Y’all” (“Os Reviento”), an audience award winner at Sitges and Fantastic Fest, will also be joining our collection.
