Among individuals closely associated with Final Fantasy, Yoshitaka Amano stands out as one of the most iconic. Since the beginning of the series, Amano’s artwork has been integral to it, and now, this esteemed artist is set to contribute to the crossover between Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy. Amano will create fresh, unique art depicting some of the franchise’s most revered characters using his signature style.
Amano shared glimpses of his fresh artwork related to Wizards of the Coast and Magic, which he posted on their respective social media platforms. Notably, we were there to capture his genuine reaction upon seeing his work transformed into a card for the very first time.
He’s been crafting Final Fantasy artwork for quite some time, and then he delved into discussing his creative approach for Kefka’s latest art, depicting both his initial and final boss forms. “For this piece, I aimed to make it as wildly imaginative as possible,” he explained, “so I chose not to adhere to any specific rules. The composition for the other one is what makes it insane – Kefka immerses himself in flames. The term that best encapsulates Kefka is ‘chaotic.’ I envisioned a palette where colors would swirl and blend, transforming a vague concept into a tangible reality. I enjoy the process of discovering intricate details.
In the game, Terra undergoes a comparable change. Initially, she’s a captive soldier, but hidden within her is an extraordinary potential that eventually surfaces, turning her into an esoteric being called an esper. Amano displayed two distinct works of art depicting these two stages of her transformation.
He went on to say that in the standard version of Terra, his aim was to depict the world of Final Fantasy by drawing a character wielding a sword, with airships visible in the distance as well. Regrettably, he hasn’t had many chances to illustrate Terra in her esper form since he initially designed it. The initial design was deliberately exaggerated; this time, he opted for a more authentic portrayal.
Later on, Amano received the artwork presented to him as cards, leaving him astounded. It’s worth noting that this isn’t Amano’s first partnership with Magic; he had previously contributed artwork for their War of the Spark deck back in 2019 as well.
“Although it’s small in size,” he added, “it is powerful.”
On June 13th, the collaboration between Final Fantasy will be released, and it’s speculated that the Sephiroth card could serve as a hint for an upcoming announcement about Final Fantasy Remake Part 3.
