Zendaya recently singled out a comedy film from the millennial era that she’s watched numerous times and continues to find amusing each time it’s shown. Interestingly enough, Zendaya’s career began as a child model and backup dancer, eventually transitioning to the Disney Channel before her big-screen debut as MJ in Spider-Man: Homecoming. After her breakout role, she’s been part of several critically acclaimed films and series, but comedy has never been her main genre.
In a short span of time, Zendaya quickly climbed the ladder in Hollywood’s ranks. The same year she entered the Spider-Man series, she also starred in the musical film “The Greatest Showman.” Following that, Zendaya appeared in all three Spider-Man films, led her own drama TV series “Euphoria,” joined the main cast of the “Dune” franchise as Chani, and was recognized for her role in “Challengers,” another drama. Interestingly, though, according to Zendaya herself, she turns to “Superbad” when she wants a good laugh.
Zendaya’s Praise Shows Why Superbad Is A Defining Millennial Movie
Zendaya Says Superbad Is Always Hilarious To Her
Despite being famous for her dramatic roles, it seems that Zendaya has a soft spot for a film that contrasts greatly with her own projects – the 2007 comedy “Superbad.” Directed by Greg Mottola, this hilarious movie is co-written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. The story revolves around two high school seniors named Seth and Evan who are on the verge of parting ways when they graduate, each planning to chart their own paths after high school.
The pair has just one remaining party to go to during their final years of high school. Evan (Michael Cera) is hoping to connect with his crush, Becca (Martha MacIssac), while Seth finds a potential romantic interest in Jules, played by Emma Stone. However, when their buddy Fogell gets arrested by the police for using a fake ID under the name McLovin, things start going wrong for the threesome. Regarding the comedy, Zendaya expressed on platform X, “No matter how many times I watch Superbad…that movie will always be hilarious to me.“.
As a dedicated cinephile, I can confidently say that “Superbad” continues to stand out as one of the unforgettable coming-of-age comedies from the 2000s. With an impressive 88% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes and an equally impressive 87% audience rating, this film manages to strike a perfect balance between the crude humor of classic raunchy comedies and a deeply moving narrative with a powerful message. Each member of the “Superbad” cast delivers a standout performance, led by the likes of Michael Cera, Jonah Hill, Emma Stone, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Bill Hader, and many more. One can’t help but wonder if Zendaya ever takes on a comedy role, would it have the same charm as her cherished “Superbad”?
Why Superbad 2 Never Happened, Despite The First Movie’s Success
None Of The Creators Wanted To Make The Sequel
Judd Apatow had plans to create a follow-up to the movie “Superbad,” but that project never materialized. The reason, as explained by Apatow, is that the original director and scriptwriters weren’t keen on depicting Seth and Evan in their college years. This decision apparently stems from what Seth Rogen mentioned regarding the prospect of a sequel. As the title suggests, “Superbad” is a semi-autobiographical account of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s teenage experiences. When asked about the idea of a sequel, Rogen expressed reservations, fearing it might not be worth the risk.
I’m so cautious about damaging the original work with a poor follow-up or spin-off, I wouldn’t dare touch it. With very few successful achievements under my belt, I’m petrified of jeopardizing what little I’ve managed to create.
Back in the day, “Superbad” held a special place in the hearts of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, as they crafted it from their own youthful experiences. If these two creators decide not to explore further, then we might never see a continuation. And let’s face it, time has marched on since its release 18 years ago, with Michael Cera and Jonah Hill moving onto grander projects. It’s safe to say that they no longer fit the mold of college students realistically. When asked about a potential sequel, Cera remarked, “I believe the story doesn’t really call for it“. However, rest assured, dear fans, Zendaya and many others can still find joy in revisiting the original “Superbad”.
