Oblivion Remastered Messes Up A Good Joke

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but appreciate the monumental effort behind reworking a game as expansive as The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. However, it’s not entirely shocking when minor details slip through during such a mammoth task, and one misaligned texture seems to have spoiled an entire running gag for some players.

On the Oblivion subreddit, it was noticed through PC Gamer that the sign for Leles’ Quality Merchandise in Anvil no longer shows the quick typo fix it had in the original game. In the original version, the shop sign was misspelled as “Lelles’ Quality Mercandise,” with the missing ‘h’ precariously placed above its correct position in the word. However, in the remastered version, the extra ‘h’ appears to be absent.

Despite being a trivial matter compared to larger issues, the oversight on Norbert Lelles’ sign, which he later hastily corrects, subtly reflects his character, as other characters often joke about his lack of intelligence. This becomes more evident during a quest where the player-character is tasked with safeguarding his store from thieves. Remarks about the sign and its correction are even casually mentioned in numerous conversations among Non-Player Characters (NPCs) throughout Anvil.

Instead of developing The Oblivion remaster internally at Bethesda, they outsourced it to Virtuos. Interestingly, Virtuos mostly maintained the essence of the original game, including its endearing quirks. Some Easter eggs remain untouched, while other parts of the game have been altered from the original version, but these changes generally improved the overall experience.

Bethesda has invited community input to enhance Oblivion Remastered after its launch, and fans have enthusiastically offered ideas for the updated version. However, so far, no post-release updates or patches have been implemented in the game.
