“It just wouldn’t end.” Jack Nicholson had enough of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and left before the end of the movie

The epic fantasy trilogy by Peter Jackson, known as The Lord of the Rings, has earned Oscars and is admired globally. While many fans in the genre consider it essential viewing, it may not appeal to everyone – even Hollywood legend Jack Nicholson found the screening of The Return of the King too much to handle.

On The Graham Norton Show, Elijah Wood shared a story about his encounter with Jack Nicholson. He told us that during their conversation, Nicholson inquired about the ending of “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.” It seemed that the esteemed actor found the film’s conclusion too lengthy for his taste, as he wasn’t able to see it all the way through.

Wood repeated the words that Nicholson had spoken during their conversation backstage at the Golden Globes, as they stood alongside Dustin Hoffman, when the topic of Lord of the Rings arose.

It just had so many endings. It just wouldn’t end.

In the continuation of their talk, Wood shared that Nicholson inquired about an ending he hadn’t witnessed yet.

He asked, “What transpired at the end?” To which I replied, “You know, Jack, I believe the story concludes with the Hobbits bidding farewell to one another, Frodo boards a boat and sets sail for the land of the immortal.” He seemed upset, saying he didn’t get to see that part because he left before the movie ended. In essence, he was expressing frustration over there being too many conclusions to the story.

As a gamer, I wasn’t alone in noticing the drawn-out conclusion of “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.” During the Academy Awards, Billy Crystal chimed in on it, jokingly commenting, “Lord of the Rings, with 11 nominations. One for each ending they could stretch out!
