Martin Scorsese is set to receive a lifetime achievement honor at the Taormina Film Festival in Italy, signifying his return to Sicily – a place with deep personal connections for him, as it’s where his ancestral roots lie, and also where he intends to film a documentary about an ancient shipwreck.
The annual Sicilian film festival, now under the leadership of marketing expert Tiziana Rocca for the second time, will feature a showing of Martin Scorsese’s 1976 masterpiece “Taxi Driver” in its grand, 8,000-seat open-air amphitheater modeled after ancient Greek architecture, nestled near the imposing Mount Etna volcano. Notable attendees of this festival throughout the years have been the likes of Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Steven Spielberg, Federico Fellini, Pedro Almodóvar, and Tom Cruise.
With great joy and strong feelings, we are thrilled to announce that Martin Scorsese will be joining us at the Taormina Film Festival,” Rocca stated. “His attendance marks a significant historical moment, not just for our festival, but for the broader cultural scene of Italy.
Scorsese transcends the role of mere filmmaker; he’s an icon living among us, whose distinctive cinematic expression delves deeply into the human psyche, intricate societal dynamics, and intense emotions in a way that no one else has managed with such force and grace, as Rocca put it.
This honor recognizes not just his extraordinary artistic achievements, but also his relentless dedication to safeguarding cinema’s heritage, fostering film culture, and harnessing the global impact of narrative.
Further information about this year’s Taormina event will be revealed at a press briefing scheduled for May 17 in Cannes.
In October 2024, Martin Scorsese made a trip to Sicily for his documentary research. The subject matter is inspired by the recent finding in Sicilian seas of the ancient shipwreck, Marausa 2, dating back to the third century A.D. During this visit, he stopped by Polizzi Generosa, a town that held significant personal history as it was where his paternal grandparents, Teresa and Francesco Scorsese, lived before their emigration to New York at the start of the last century.
The 71st edition of Taormina will run June 10-14.
