Warning: SPOILERS for the Doctor Who episode “The Story & the Engine” are ahead!
We’ve already passed the midway mark of Season 2 of “Doctor Who” in the 2025 TV lineup, and the most recent episode can be streamed with a Disney+ subscription. In this outing, Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor finds himself stuck in a barbershop in Lagos, Nigeria, where the locals must share tales to fuel an alien engine. The standout moment from “The Story & the Engine” was undoubtedly the brief cameo by Jo Martin’s Fugitive Doctor, who first appeared during the Thirteenth Doctor‘s tenure. Although Martin didn’t stay onscreen for long, her appearance suggests that a continuing narrative from Jodie Whittaker’s “Doctor Who” run has been conclusively resolved at last.
In the course of Doctor Who, it was during the tenure of the Thirteenth Doctor that we discovered there were previous incarnations of the main character before the First Doctor. One such incarnation was the Fugitive Doctor, but interestingly enough, The Doctor didn’t remember their self from before the First Doctor. This revelation stemmed from the fact that The Doctor was unveiled as once being the Timeless Child, an orphan from an unknown world whom the Time Lords copied regeneration from and incorporated into their genetic makeup.
In the finale of “Doctor Who: Flux,” I found myself in possession of a pocket watch filled with all my forgotten memories from past incarnations. Yet instead of delving into the recollections, I chose to place that enigmatic timepiece within the TARDIS, hinting at a future when The Doctor might be prepared to reclaim those memories. For now, though, I yearned to keep them at arm’s length.

In “The Story & the Engine,” it was revealed that the Fifteenth Doctor had previously encountered Anansi’s daughter Abena when he was the Fugitive Doctor. This meeting seemed to have happened without any known events triggering this memory. Could it be that the pre-First Doctor memories were spontaneously resurfacing within the Time Lord’s mind? It’s possible, but another theory suggests that after the Thirteenth Doctor regenerated, The Doctor chose to find and use the fob watch hidden within the TARDIS to fill in these missing memory fragments.

Actress who played a villain in an episode titled “Ruby Sunday” on the show Doctor Who has been confirmed to reappear for the final episode of season 2. I’m excited about this upcoming confrontation between our characters!
Ncuti Gatwa Secured Another Role as the Future of Doctor Who Remains Uncertain, Yet this New Position Offers Optimism that the Series may Continue.
I must confess, it’s a scene I’d love to witness unfold, but I can appreciate why it might be better suited off-screen. The entrance of Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, timed with the global release of Doctor Who on Disney+ beyond the UK, has made this era particularly welcoming for new viewers. Indeed, there have been numerous references and returns of past Doctor Who figures like Vanessa Redgrave’s Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Bonnie Langford’s Mel Bush. However, this time around, the emphasis has been more on making the series accessible to a wider international audience than ever before.
Exploring the intricate details of those early memories for the pre-First Doctor might be too challenging a task at this point within ‘Doctor Who’. It’s acceptable for the Fugitive Doctor to make a brief appearance or hint at the Timeless Child by telling Ruby Sunday that he is adopted, but attempting to unravel the background story behind the fob watch and fit it into the narrative that Russell T. Davies and his team are currently developing seems difficult. For now, my personal interpretation is that the Fourteenth Doctor opened the watch during his recovery from the psychological trauma of his recent lives as part of his healing process.
In just three more episodes of Season 2 of Doctor Who, if The Doctor ever reveals the secret behind the fob watch, I’ll have to concede my mistake. Until then, I’m left wondering about the enigmatic character of Mrs. Flood.
