Cannes Film Festival Bans Nudity and ‘Voluminous’ Outfits on the Red Carpet

Cannes has made an announcement: Nudity and overly extravagant outfits will no longer be permitted on the red carpet at the Palais.

Following a protester going bare-chested on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet last year and Bianca Censori pushing boundaries with her see-through gown at this year’s Grammys, the festival has made an official announcement in line with its own regulations and French law.

This year, the Cannes Film Festival has officially stated some rules that have been unofficially enforced before. The intention is not to control clothing choices but rather to ban complete nudity on the red carpet, in line with the traditional norms and legal requirements of the event in France.

Furthermore, the festival also maintains the ability to restrict entry for those whose clothing might hinder the mobility of other visitors or create difficulties with seat arrangements within the screening areas.

Although it’s uncertain if extravagant outfits similar to Greta Gerwig’s voluminous Barbie-pink dress with a mid-sized train would be prohibited, longer trains might contribute to congestion among celebrities ascending the famous Palais steps and potentially pose a risk.

For several years, Cannes has been embroiled in debates concerning its red carpet dress codes, including the rule that attendees must wear formal footwear like elegant shoes for evening screenings. Critics argue this policy is discriminatory towards women, as the term “elegant” has traditionally meant high heels, a point reinforced by the Palais guards’ strict enforcement. While low heels are now tolerated (but not sneakers), there are still instances of misunderstandings or exclusions, such as when an Indigenous producer was denied entry in 2022 for wearing moccasins.
