Cristian Mungiu’s “Fjord,” a gripping family drama featuring Sebastian Stan (recently nominated for an Oscar as young Donald Trump in “The Apprentice”) and Renate Reinsve (acclaimed for her role in “The Worst Person in the World”), has been acquired for distribution by Neon, the esteemed studio behind hits like “Anora” and “Parasite.” Stan and Reinsve previously worked together in the 2024 release, “A Different Man.
The movie chronicles the journey of the Gheorghiu family – a Romanian father (Stan) and a Norwegian mother (Reinsve) – as they adapt to their new life in a secluded Norwegian village, where Reinsve was born. They swiftly develop friendships with the Halbergs, who reside in a house close by the bay, and despite their contrasting backgrounds, the children of both families soon grow fond of each other. However, when the Gheorghius are accused of suspicious activities, they find themselves at the center of local gossip and have their lives disrupted by the town’s scrutiny.
Goodfellas is managing global distribution of the movie, and Neon has secured the rights to screen it across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. Filming for the movie has come to an end in Norway.
The term “Fjord” signifies that Mungiu’s first film in English is making its debut. Known for his frequent appearances at Cannes, Mungiu has garnered significant recognition, including the Palme d’Or for “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days,” as well as best director awards for “Graduation” and best screenplay honors for “Beyond the Hills,” all at the festival.
Beyond its victory at the Oscars for Best Picture, “Anora” also received the Palme d’Or at Cannes. This year, Neon is back at the festival to unveil Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value,” Julia Ducournau’s “Alpha,” Raoul Peck’s “Orwell: 2+2=5,” and Michael Angelo Covino’s “Splitsville,” which stars Dakota Johnson and Adria Arjona.
The film ‘Fjord’ is a collaborative production among Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, France, and Romania. It was brought to life by Mobra Films, Eye-Eye Pictures, Why Not Productions, and Goodfellas, in partnership with Snowglobe, Aamu Film Company, Garage Film, FilmGate Films, and Film i Vast. This production was also supported by Eurimages and Creative Europe Media.”

Sarah Colvin, Vice President of Acquisitions at Neon, and Eva Diederix, the head of sales for Goodfellas, were the ones who worked out the terms of the agreement.
