Damson Idris, Anamaria Vartolomei to Star as Miles Davis and Juliette Greco in Mick Jagger-Produced ‘Miles & Juliette’

Actors Damson Idris (“F1”) and Anamaria Vartolomei (“Mickey 17”) are set to appear in “Miles & Juliette,” a movie directed by Bill Pohlad (“Love & Mercy”). This film takes place in Paris. Joining them will be Canadian director and actor Xavier Dolan, known for his work on “Matthias & Maxime.” In the film, Idris and Vartolomei will play their respective characters opposite Dolan.

Written by Pulitzer Prize finalist Zora Howard (“Premature”), “Miles & Juliette” narrates the tale of 22-year-old Miles Davis (played by Idris), who embarks on a life-changing journey to Paris in 1949, where he develops a passionate relationship with Juliette Gréco (Vartolomei), the renowned French singer, actress, and Left Bank icon. The story unfolds as an intimate affair that deepens into a profound bond between two budding artists, on the brink of their rise to cultural stardom.

This month, “Goodfellas” plans to initiate global distribution of the film “Miles & Juliette” at the Cannes Film Festival Market, whereas CAA Media Finance manages the distribution rights for North America.

Under his production company, River Road Entertainment (known for movies like “Brokeback Mountain” and “12 Years a Slave”), Pohlad will both direct and produce this project. Kim Roth, who has worked on “Mudbound,” is also producing. Additionally, Mick Jagger and Victoria Pearman of Jagged Films, responsible for films such as “Get on Up,” “Vinyl,” and Martin Scorsese’s “Shine a Light,” and the Miles Davis Estate are also involved in production, with Jagged Films contributing in association with the Miles Davis Estate.

Though my focus has largely been on music, I’ve also been captivated by the depth and intricacy of a profound love story,” expressed Pohlad. He further noted that he considers himself extremely lucky to delve into both aspects – through the perspective of two artists whose relationship was as transient as it was impactful. The filmmaker explained that “Miles & Juliette” isn’t solely about these two artists, but rather, it’s about the universal beat of falling in love, undergoing transformation because of it, and forever carrying the resonance left behind even after the experience has ended.

As a movie critic, I’m absolutely ecstatic to be involved in a production that honors the formative years of Miles Davis, a musical titan who captivated the world, and his profound love affair with Juliette Gréco. Let me tell you, Miles Davis was undeniably one of the most significant and impactful musicians of the 20th century, leaving an indelible mark on the music industry that continues to resonate today.

The upcoming project will bring Pohlad together once more with cinematographer Arnaud Potier, who has previously worked on “Dreamin’ Wild” and “Les Cowboys.” Notably, the prestigious production team is also made up of production designer Dan Weil, known for his work on “American Made” and “The Bourne Identity,” as well as Grammy-winning artist Robert Glasper, who will contribute to the film’s music by composing and producing a fusion of jazz, hip-hop, and soul.
