In a new psychological thriller directed by Jason Segel’s “Shrinking” filmmaker, James Ponsoldt, the main character will be played by Jason Segel himself.
In the movie “Sponsor”, Segel’s character will be subjected to intense trials. This gripping film revolves around a reckless driver who, as part of his court-mandated rehabilitation program, encounters an enigmatic figure from a 12-step group. Over time, this mysterious guide leads him into a nightmarish experience, akin to living through hell itself.
The upcoming movie package is being distributed by Platinum Dunes, known for producing “A Quiet Place” and “The Purge.” It will kick off sales this week during the Cannes Film Festival through UTA Independent Film Group and mk2. The film is directed by Ponsoldt, who co-wrote the script with Segel.
In a joint statement, Segel and Ponsoldt expressed their interest in investigating the transformation of aid into oppression – when someone you rely on for help becomes your greatest fear. Having worked together on ‘Shrinking,’ they were eager to transfer that emotional intensity into a chilling psychological thriller. The risks are higher, the perils are more treacherous, and the themes are intensely personal. We’re thrilled to share this unsettling tale with such an exceptional crew.
In the upcoming production, Segel portrays Peter, a man confronting a difficult decision after a serious drunk-driving accident. Facing prison time or rehabilitation, he encounters Jerry, a character yet to be cast, who employs an unusual method for achieving sobriety. This journey leads Peter into the most challenging depths of self-discovery.
Brad Fuller from Platinum Dunes shared that they were captivated by the unexpected plot twists and the intimate glimpse into the recovery world. Additionally, having Jason and James collaborate adds significant depth to their enthusiasm.
