Original XCOM Creator Thinks Switch 2 Mouse Controls Have Big Strategy-Game Potential

Strategy games are often associated with PCs as their primary platform, but Julian Gollop, creator of XCOM, envisions an expansion of strategy game potential on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 due to the Joy-Con 2’s mouse-like control capabilities. Although console strategy games have adopted custom control schemes instead of the traditional mouse and keyboard setup, as demonstrated by Frostpunk 2 and Age of Empires 2: HD, strategy game enthusiasts usually prefer a more conventional method of play.

Gollop expressed surprise when he learned about the new feature added to the console, finding it intriguing. He suggested that a strategy game with controls similar to a traditional mouse could potentially work well on this platform. Moreover, the number of switches available on the device could effectively replace keyboard commands. All in all, he found the idea of adapting a traditional mouse and keyboard RTS using the Switch 2 controllers quite intriguing.

On the Switch 2’s debut with Civilization 7, strategy games aren’t the only ones that can benefit from enhanced control options; mouse controls will be introduced across multiple game genres as well. For instance, first-person titles such as Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition are set to support mouse input, while games like Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster and Deltarune hint at innovative ways of utilizing these controls.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but get excited about Nintendo’s plans to offer a fresh gaming experience! They’ve got an exciting lineup on the horizon, including Drag x Drive, Super Mario Party Jamboree, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour. For those of us eager to dive into a world of diverse minigames and activities, these new hardware features are just the ticket!
