A Twisted New Team Claims the Name ‘X-Men’ in X-Men #16

Reflecting upon it, each publication of a comic book feels somewhat miraculous, particularly for series like X-Men that churn out 18 issues annually. Consider the myriad elements that must align perfectly to produce a completed comic book just two weeks after its predecessor – writing, illustration, coloring, and lettering. It’s truly mind-boggling, isn’t it?

Whenever I encounter comics with multiple inkers, I can’t help but marvel at the good fortune that these books manage to look as impressive as they do given the tight deadlines faced by their creators. In light of this challenging environment, I believe we should appreciate even more the skill and dedication required to produce a great comic book in such a short span of time.

In issue #16 of X-Men, written by Jed MacKay and illustrated by Netho Diaz, JP Mayer, Livesay, and Sean Parsons, colored by Fer Sifuentes-Sojo, and lettered by Clayton Cowles, the story continues from a dramatic cliffhanger. The X-Men are grappling with two ongoing crises – a mutant twin sister of a human has transformed into a monstrous being using a dead alien’s body, and Cassandra Nova is manipulating her against the X-Men. To add to their shock, another group claiming to be X-Men appear!

Who are the twisted new X-Men?

To start off this series, the X-Men came across a set of humans in San Marco, who were later experimented on and transformed into mutants as adults, despite never having mutant abilities prior to this change. Now, under the command of 3K, they are presenting themselves as the latest iteration of the X-Men.

How do the X-Men handle these new villains?

In this latest installment, the new X-Men display an unexpected resilience, leading to a standoff with their adversaries by issue’s end. Netho Diaz demonstrates just as impressive workmanship here as he did during the epic X-Men versus Storm battle.
