Fans are eagerly anticipating Sydney Sweeney‘s upcoming remake of the iconic sci-fi film, “Barbarella,” and it seems the actress is diligently working on bringing this project to life. Back in 2022, it was revealed that Sweeney would star in and produce a modern take on the 1968 cult classic, originally led by Jane Fonda. In 2024, renowned director Edgar Wright joined the team to helm the film, with plans to start work on it after he finishes directing another remake titled “The Running Man,” which features Sweeney’s co-star from “Anyone but You,” Glen Powell.
According to Screen Rant, as mentioned by Empire Magazine, Sweeney disclosed that she recently met in London about the potential Barbarella remake. “I can’t reveal much,” Sweeney shared, “but I assure you it will shape up to be an incredibly entertaining and grand production. The process is lengthy; things might seem slow, but trust me, it’s going to be a wait worth having.
When inquired about whether playing the role of Barbarella was on her wish list, Sweeny excitedly affirmed this with a resounding “yes”.
“Yes, it is! That’s what I’m saying! My thirties, I’ve really got to step it up!”
The Long Road to Remake ‘Barbarella’
Instead of eagerly anticipating Sweeney stepping into the renowned role that Jane Fonda previously embodied, she has been occupied during the past three years following the announcement of Barbarella . Her collaboration with Sony Pictures on Madame Web was followed by the successful romantic comedy, Anyone but You – a production also managed by the studio responsible for Sweeney and Wright’s remake. Last year, she starred in and produced the horror sensation, Immaculate. In 2025, Sweeney is slated to appear in three films: The Ron Howard-directed Eden, a thriller titled Echo Valley, and director Paul Feig’s The Housemaid. Additionally, she will portray professional boxer Christy Martin in a biopic during the filming of Euphoria Season 3.
It’s no secret that delays in producing a new Barbarella are not uncommon. In fact, a direct sequel was initially planned after the first film’s release in 1968 but was ultimately canceled. A sequel proposal resurfaced in 1991 with Jane Fonda’s daughter as the lead, but that idea never materialized either. Later, director Robert Rodriguez started working on a remake featuring Rose McGowan in the main role, but those plans crumbled in 2009 when Universal Pictures decided against financing the film. More recently, Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn was slated to direct an Amazon Prime Video pilot, but that project also stalled. So, in essence, fans have been eagerly waiting for new Barbarella content for quite some time now.
In November 2024, Wright’s movie “The Running Man” is scheduled to premiere, potentially allowing him to transition immediately into the development of “Barbarella”. However, it remains unclear if Sweeney will prioritize this project due to the many high-profile films she already has in production. She is currently discussing a role in the upcoming “Gundam” film and is also slated to star in adaptations of video games like “Outrun” and “Split Fiction”. Given her busy schedule, it’s no surprise that “Barbarella” has been delayed.
