Netflix’s New Judy Blume Adaptation Gets Impressive Rotten Tomatoes Score (& Audiences Agree)

The new series has launched with a robust rating on Rotten Tomatoes, delighting both critics and viewers alike.

Since its premiere on Netflix on May 8th, Forever has garnered a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. The audience score is remarkably close, only trailing slightly at 94%. Critics seem to be nearly universally positive about this series, which tells the story of two childhood friends who rekindle their relationship as teenagers and eventually fall in love.

In an enthusiastic appraisal, critic Aramide Tinubu remarked that the series presents a unique and deeply moving portrayal of first love, particularly from the perspective of two young African-Americans, which is seldom encountered on television or elsewhere.

As a devoted viewer, I must say that this series has an irresistible charm to it. The characters, each with their unique desires and perspectives, often find themselves in disagreement, yet they generally exhibit kindness towards one another.

According to another critique by Nadira Goffe, no other series has managed to portray the complex reality of growing up Black amidst a predominantly white setting quite like Forever does.

The Audience Reviews Are Very Strong

One viewer is raving about their favorite new show of the year so far, saying it’s outstanding across all aspects – acting, writing, direction, music. They’re genuinely impressed and encourage others not to miss out on this gem!

Someone raved about it, commenting on the exceptional acting chemistry they saw.”The actors were phenomenal in their roles! The series “Forever” is adapted from a book by Judy Blume titled the same, which was released in 1975. The story unfolds in the year 2018, with Lovie Simone and Michael Cooper Jr. taking on principal roles. Additionally, the cast includes Xosha Roquemore, Marvin Lawrence Winans III, Wood Harris, Karen Pittman, and Bary Shabaka Henley.

2023’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.” has been exceptionally well-received, much like the last Judy Blume adaptation did. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently boasts a 99% approval rating and an audience score of 94%. This places it among the two most acclaimed adaptations of Blume’s novels, alongside “Forever.

The initial interpretation of Blume’s work revolved around “Forever”; it was a TV film produced in 1978. Other adaptations of hers include the 1991 release, “Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great,” and the 2012 version, “Tiger Eyes.” Additionally, her work “Fudge-a-Mania” led to a TV film that aired on ABC in 1995. This was followed by a Saturday morning TV series, which ran for two seasons.

Forever is now streaming on Netflix.
