During the Guilty Gear Strive Grand Finals at EVO Japan, a PlayStation 5 overheated, causing the gameplay to temporarily pause.
Over a span of three days, the yearly fighting game tournament concluded its last day on May 11, featuring Grand Finals for multiple championships such as Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, Strive, among others.
In the last round of the Strive Grand Final, the match between Daru_I-NO (playing I-No) and RedDitto (with Ramlethal Valentine) concluded without further play.
On Twitch, viewers watched as both players’ characters moved backwards and momentarily stopped during the game. Then, the action switched to the commentators’ booth.
Twitch broadcast showed both players’ characters walking backward and pausing occasionally; later, the camera focused on the commentary box.
Uh-oh, it seems another problem has arisen,” began the first commentator, while the second lamented, “It’s truly disheartening how these championship finals are unfolding.
Seconds later, both players resumed play, with Daru ultimately taking the win.

Multiple EVO Japan PS5 issues reported
2025’s edition of the event saw numerous instances of PlayStation 5 consoles malfunctioning, with these issues being widely discussed on the internet both during and following the event.
In a tweet posted on May 9th, I, as a dedicated gamer, expressed my dissatisfaction with the PS5’s performance. I attributed my recent defeat in a Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves match to what I perceive as a malfunction in the console.
I’ve been having some issues with my PS5, which caused me to lose in the Call of the Wild tournament because the controller started moving backward unintentionally, and other features stopped working. This problem occurred during EVO Japan in Street Fighter 6 last year as well.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that many people are attributing the recent problems at gaming events, including EVO, to overheating PS5s in hot venues. However, neither the event organizers nor Sony have officially confirmed this theory. Sony, being one of the co-owners of EVO, hasn’t released an official statement on the matter yet.
Whatever the confirmed cause, numerous fighting game fans voiced their disappointment.
Troublesome conclusion for EVO Japan. It’s disconcerting that a tournament of EVO’s caliber encountered problems as fundamental as ‘a PS5 was left on all day, causing overheating during the finals,’ which appears to be an oversight.
People are urging the organizers of the event to switch to a different system, like moving from PlayStation 5 (PS5) to Personal Computers (PCs), especially for major tournaments. It’s been long overdue, as events such as EVO Japan not using PCs is disappointing and limiting what the PS5 can offer in terms of tournament competition.
Every year, numerous EVO competitions take place globally, including EVO USA which is scheduled for August 1, 2025, in the vibrant city of Las Vegas.
