Thunderbolts Become The New Avengers?

🚨Caution! This post may reveal spoilers for Thunderbolts*, a Marvel Cinematic Universe film that seems pivotal in the Multiverse Saga. I’m eagerly anticipating this new Avengers team, but I hope they won’t bear the weight of a lackluster name following their initial appearance. Personally, my biggest gripe about the Multiverse Saga so far is its sense of aimlessness – something exacerbated by the absence of Marvel’s Avengers movies. These films not only defined the franchise, but also served as unifying events that brought together characters from across the MCU. Without them, many heroes haven’t had a chance to cross paths yet.

The issue became more prominent when Disney+ required an expansion of MCU projects, leading to the debut of numerous characters across films, series, and post-credit scenes. However, it seems that Marvel might be unsure about how to utilize some of these characters, such as Harry Styles’ Eros. *Thunderbolts*’ post-credits scene provides a clearer direction for the franchise and hints at the revival of the MCU’s Avengers movies, but there’s one decision that I hope was merely a humorous move by Marvel rather than a significant one.

Sam Wilson Is Building A New Avengers Team

The MCU Now Has Two Avengers Teams After Years With None

In the course of “Thunderbolts” shaping up the MCU’s New Avengers team, it doesn’t diminish Captain America’s narrative. The character Sam Wilson, portrayed by Anthony Mackie, was tasked by Harrison Ford’s President Thaddeus Ross to revive the Avengers. I can appreciate Sam’s reservations, given that working under government control might restrict Earth’s top superheroes, a concept Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), the original Captain America, had strongly opposed when he refused to endorse the Sokovia Accords. Nevertheless, by the end of “Captain America: Brave New World,” Sam made up his mind to reassemble the Avengers alongside Joaquin Torres.

I’m really looking forward to Captain America’s Avengers squad! In my opinion, Sam Wilson has demonstrated in “Brave New World” and Disney+’s “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” that he is deserving of Steve Rogers’ mantle as Captain America and not just a good person, but an exceptional leader. The team Sam leads could potentially include characters like Thor, Black Panther (Shuri), and Shang-Chi, all of whom are confirmed to be part of the cast for “Avengers: Doomsday.” Even though I’m cheering on Captain America’s Avengers squad, I can’t help but feel frustrated over one choice he made after the conclusion of “Thunderbolts.”

*Note: It seems there might be some confusion as “Thunderbolts” does not have an ending reveal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Perhaps the author intended to refer to another event or storyline.

The Thunderbolts Have Become The New Avengers After They Earned The Upgrade

The Anti-Heroes Changed In A Fundamental Way In The 2025 MCU Movie

As I walked into “Thunderbolts”, I hadn’t anticipated developing such a strong affection for the team, but here we are. Initially, these characters were mere anti-heroes that the world had either forgotten or never knew about. Marvel aimed to alter this perception, demonstrating that these characters deserve more than just their current standing. They not only joined forces to combat the Void, but the Thunderbolts went beyond their mission, saving Bob, bonding as a family, and elevating their status within the franchise.

One of my favorite scenes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is found in Thunderbolts*, and it isn’t about superheroes battling villains. Instead, it showcases the team’s compassion for those without powers. In Thunderbolts*, each member gets a chance to shine, using their unique abilities to rescue civilians from debris caused by the Void’s initial assault. This act of heroism stands out for a group that initially appeared as anti-heroes with questionable morals and troubled psyches. This scene is significant because it solidified in the minds of MCU fans that Thunderbolts* were true heroes.

In light of all the events portrayed in the film, I firmly believe the protagonists rightfully earned the promotion they received at the finale, as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine officially unveiled the ex-Thunderbolts as The New Avengers to the public. Just like the initial Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Avengers team, these new heroes will be based out of Avengers Tower. With Valentina under their control, they possess an abundance of resources at their disposal. Their actions demonstrated their heroism and justified their ascension to The New Avengers. The post-credits scene twist left a sour taste in my mouth because I felt it didn’t align with the characters deserving this new role.

I Loved The Thunderbolts’ Dynamic & Calling Them The New Avengerz Feels Like A Disservice After The Team’s Growth

The MCU Can Have More Than One Team With The “Avengers” Name

Red Guardian playfully proposes renaming the heroes to “The New Avengerz,” complete with a “Z.” This change might seem like a downgrade. This idea originates from Sam Wilson’s desire to claim the Avengers trademark for his group, thereby making them the sole Avengers. I can see why Captain America would favor this move, as he dislikes the concept of a government-backed Avengers team such as “The New Avengers.” Additionally, he is establishing his own team.

In the world of comics, it’s not uncommon for there to be several Avengers teams at once. This suggests that in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the Thunderbolts could be rebranded as The New Avengers, while Sam’s team would simply be known as “Avengers.” I cherish the sense of family within this team and hope they continue to grow, especially considering their past struggles. Renaming them The New “Avengerz” might seem like a downgrade given their evolution and crucial roles, such as saving New York City.

I Hope The New Avengers Find A Legal Loophole To Keep The Team’s Name

There Are Superhero Lawyers Who Could Help The Marvel Team

Bucky O’Brien attempted conversation with Sam, yet this strategy proved ineffective. Consequently, it may be necessary for The New Avengers to resort to a courtroom dispute in order to retain their name, given that Captain America is advocating for the team’s trademark. Meanwhile, the Thunderbolts credits sequence showcased how media outlets had been portraying the team as “The New Avengers” during the 14-month time jump depicted in the film. This extended period of public recognition could potentially bolster their legal arguments.

In light of the growing popularity of The New Avengers, a potential legal dispute with Sam Wilson over the team’s name might draw some prominent attorneys. I think two superhero lawyers could be recruited for Avengers: Doomsday to resolve this matter. These would be Daredevil and She-Hulk. Although she is widely recognized, Matt Murdock runs a successful law firm in New York City, the very city where The New Avengers are based, and has represented numerous heroes within the MCU. If there’s anyone who can uncover a legal loophole to ensure that The New Avengers retain the title they rightfully earned in Thunderbolts*, it’s Daredevil.

*Note: I have corrected the reference to “Thunderbolts” as it was initially misspelled as “Thundershots.
