The QCinema International Film Festival in the Philippines is preparing to debut at the Cannes Film Festival with the worldwide introduction of QCinema Industry – an all-year-round professional network. This initiative’s goal is to establish Quezon City as a leading film center in Southeast Asia.
The growth phase represents a substantial advancement for the 13-year-old event, aiming to strengthen the region’s influence within the international content market by encouraging collaborative film production, nurturing local talent, and facilitating discussions on policy matters across the Philippine and Southeast Asian film industries.
Liza Diño, head of the new endeavor, announced that QCinema Industry will be showcased at Cannes, the globally recognized film festival, to demonstrate the increasing influence and aspirations of Southeast Asian cinema.
Dino underscored the program’s robust emphasis on documentaries: “An exclusive documentary segment is crucial in a top-tier festival. It validates the potency of non-fictional narratives to expose truths, stimulate discourse, and spark social transformation. With initiatives like QCinema Dokyu Days, we acknowledge that documentaries are not mere mirrors of reality – they function as catalysts for change within it.
The representatives from Cannes are indicating that QCinema is employing a two-pronged approach: showcasing Filipino films on the international stage and selecting exceptional global content to cater to local viewers.
Ed Lejano, director of QCinema, noted that Cannes has historically been a venue for unveiling fresh cinematic voices and honoring them. This is where we discover the films we later share with Filipino viewers, providing them with perspectives they may not have encountered otherwise. Additionally, it serves as a platform for our filmmakers to network within the international film industry, thereby establishing QCinema as an essential Southeast Asian center.
The QCinema Project Market (QPM), now in its third year, has demonstrated its value as a nurturing ground for regional talent. Films previously chosen for QPM have garnered international acclaim, such as “Don’t Cry, Butterfly,” which won two awards at Venice and the grand jury prize at QCinema, and “Tale of the Land,” which was awarded the Fipresci prize in Busan’s New Currents section.
From November 17th to the 23rd, the event will take place in Quezon City’s Araneta City district. This extensive program consists of five main parts. The QCinema Dokyu Days (November 17th-18th) will provide a two-day focus on documentaries, featuring screenings and an Impact Lab with international mentors from Doc Society/GIPA. Additionally, the QCinema Project Market (Nov. 19th-22nd) aims to connect Southeast Asian film projects in their advanced stages of development with possible co-producers, sales agents, and financiers.
The QCinema Asian Next Wave Film Forum (held on November 22-23) will delve into discussions centered around the Film City idea, with an emphasis on gender equality, environmental sustainability, and innovative technologies. As Manet Dayrit, who oversees the forum, stated, “The idea of Film City is not just about having sound stages and festivals – it’s about fostering environments where cinema flourishes, artists are nurtured, and culture influences urban development.” Quezon City’s dedication to this vision through the QCinema Industry serves as an inspiring example.
On November 19th, QCinema’s Creative Industries Day will feature a summit focusing on creative infrastructure, laws, and Quezon City’s status as a UNESCO Creative City of Film. Additionally, the QCinema Critics Lab, operating throughout the event, offers a comprehensive mentorship program for eight budding Philippine film critics under 30 years old, guided by critic Jason Tan Liwag.
Currently, a film titled “Bleat!” – a joint production by Malaysia, the Philippines, and France, helmed by director Ananth Subramaniam – is vying in this year’s Cannes Critics’ Week short film competition. This marks the first time a Malaysian short film has been chosen for Cannes, making it a significant milestone. Previously, Subramaniam had triumphed at QPM with his feature project “The Passport.
I’m thrilled to share that my latest creation, “Agapito,” is making waves in this year’s Cannes Short Film Competition! Just last year, my project “Ria” was recognized at QPM 2023. As a movie enthusiast who’s passionate about bringing stories to life, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride and excitement with each new milestone reached.
