Toby Fox, the mastermind behind Deltarune and Undertale, has unveiled fresh details about the upcoming third and fourth installments of Deltarune. After a long wait since Chapter 2 dropped in September 2021, fans finally got an update during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct on April 2nd – the new console will debut with both Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 on June 5th. The upcoming chapters won’t be exclusive to the Switch 2, as they’ll also be available on other platforms. To sweeten the deal, Fox encourages players to start or continue their Deltarune journey on their preferred console of choice, making this an ideal time to dive back into this captivating game!
Deltarune will have “Cross-Buy”: upgraded versions for newer consoles are free
In simpler terms, purchasing Deltarune on the PlayStation Store gives you access to both the PS4 and PS5 versions at one price, and they plan to do something similar for Nintendo platforms as well. This means that if you own a PlayStation 4 or Nintendo Switch, you won’t need to buy the game again when you upgrade to the PlayStation 5 or the rumored Nintendo Switch 2, as these consoles have backward compatibility but often require different versions of games for each platform.
If you’re already a fan of Deltarune, you might be curious about upcoming installments. The game will consist of four chapters initially, to be released on June 5th. However, the creator has mentioned that there could potentially be seven chapters in total. On the game’s official website, it is stated that future chapters will be available as free updates once they are ready for release. Interestingly, the first four chapters will cost $24.99 upon their release on June 5th. However, the fifth, sixth, and seventh chapters will be free after this initial purchase, making it an attractive deal for what could become a memorable RPG experience, similar to Undertale.
A significant portion of the newsletter provided insights about the precise launch date of Deltarune. As for the Switch 2, we’re mainly interested in how quickly people can secure one. The Switch 2 is set to hit shelves locally at midnight on June 5th, although many might not receive their consoles by then. On the other hand, the game will be simultaneously launched worldwide at Japan Standard Time midnight. This implies that for a significant portion of the globe, including the U.S. and Europe, the game will technically become available on June 4th: 8:00 AM Pacific Time, 11:00 AM Eastern Time, and 5:00 PM Central European Time.
As a gamer, I’ve got to admit, receiving a free version of Deltarune for Nintendo Switch 2 with my original console purchase almost seems like an unexpected move from Nintendo. The gaming community hasn’t exactly been thrilled about the pricing strategy for games on their new console. The $80 tag for Mario Kart World has raised some eyebrows, and to add fuel to the fire, a few games with Switch 2 versions are going to set us back at least an extra $10, on top of what we initially paid when the game was first released, which hasn’t gone down too well.
