Overwatch 2 Devs: Stadium Mode Leaver Rates Shockingly High!

The developers of Overwatch 2 have addressed issues related to the new Stadium mode and players who quit during games causing disruptions.

Season 16 of Overwatch 2 launched with one of the game’s biggest new modes in the form of Stadium.

In this innovative competitive setting, there’s a best-of-7 format that features a reduced roster of characters compared to regular gameplay. Here, players can buy boosts for their champions as they engage in battles on exclusively redesigned maps tailored for this specific mode.

As a passionate gamer, I’ve found myself immersed in the exciting world of Stadium, a fresh take on Overwatch. It’s been an enjoyable ride so far, but there’s one persistent problem that’s been causing trouble during matches: players leaving prematurely, or leavers as they’re commonly known.

Overwatch 2 devs not worried about Stadium’s big leaver problem

Ever since the game’s release, numerous discussions have emerged on Reddit and official forums, where players express frustration over a high number of teammates leaving their matches.

It’s quite frequent to see posts like these: “Why are so many people leaving Stadium during matches?”, “Departures during matches at Stadium are causing issues”, or “The high number of people leaving Stadium is a significant concern”.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed that single Stadium matches, being Best of 7, tend to last longer compared to regular games. This prolonged playtime might be a factor in the unusual rate of players leaving the game prematurely.

On May 9, it was disclosed by the Game Director, Aaron Keller, that the number of players leaving the game was more than they initially thought.

Originally, our analysis indicated an attrition rate of 7%, but upon adjusting the methodology for data gathering, it appears the actual attrition rate is more accurately around 12% (specifically on personal computers).

It appears that most of this issue stems from novice players. As you play more matches, the rate of people leaving games decreases significantly. Given that Stadium is fresh and relatively new, we anticipate that the leaver rate will decline further and stabilize at a much lower level in the forthcoming weeks.

It would be intriguing to observe whether the departure rate decreases as anticipated, or how the developers respond if it persists as a significant issue.

At present, Overwatch 2 players might find it beneficial to hold off on entering Stadium for a while. This could allow time for the quitter rates to stabilize, reducing the possibility of their matches becoming almost impossible to win due to having one fewer teammate.
