Barry Keoghan is gearing up to portray Ringo Starr in Sam Mendes’ Beatles biographical films, yet he hasn’t quite mastered the art of drumming for a public display as of now.
On Jimmy Kimmel Live’s show last night, Keoghan disclosed that he had his first encounter with the music icon. He mentioned that they met at Ringo’s house, and Ringo even played the drums for him. However, Keoghan clarified that although Ringo invited him to play as well, he himself was not playing the drums for Ringo.
As a movie critic, I’d rephrase it as follows: “During Jimmy Kimmel’s show, ‘Saltburn’ actor Liam Keoghan subtly reminded him that Robert Starr was actually the one who leaked his casting to the media back in November. In other words, Starr was the one who spilled the beans. Keoghan said, ‘He hinted at it, something like, “Barry is somewhere banging on drums. Maybe he should just stop and not do anymore.”‘
Keoghan expressed that encountering Starr was “one of those instances where you’re left utterly spellbound” and he “simply stood still.” (or “felt speechless”)
During our conversation, I found myself avoiding eye contact, feeling a bit jittery,” Keoghan admitted. “However, he casually suggested, ‘You can look at me.’ Well, when you’re interacting with someone as iconic as Ringo Starr, my role is to watch closely and learn from his gestures.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement about the upcoming Beatles biopics! I’ll be honored to watch Cillian Murphy (that’s me!) bring Starr to life across four distinct films, all masterfully directed by none other than Sam Mendes. These epic tales are slated for a grand theatrical debut in April 2028.
In this incredible ensemble, I’ll be joined by Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison. The anticipation is palpable, and I can hardly wait to see these talented actors breathe life into the Fab Four!
In an interview, Keoghan mentioned his approach to portraying Starr was to “make it feel real and emotional rather than simply mimicking,” sharing that their conversations were “quite delightful” and they spent time casually chatting in a garden.
