Warning: This article contains spoilers for Andor Season 2 and Star Wars: Rebels
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I can’t help but notice the waves caused by Season 2 Episode 9 – the tweaking of long-held beliefs that some fans just can’t ignore. In this episode, titled “Welcome to the Rebellion“, Mon Mothma delivers a speech that effortlessly becomes iconic. It’s like Aragorn’s inspiring words before the Black Gate in Lord of the Rings, hitting a similar note.
Nevertheless, an outstanding episode in the series (are there others from Andor?), subtly alters the understanding of fans familiar with Star Wars: Rebels, as Mon Mothma delivers a distinct speech in the animated show compared to her portrayal. Unlike in Andor, she is escorted to Yavin 4 by the Gold Squadron instead of being assisted in evading ISB agents by Cassian Andor, as seen in this series. Discussing this with Entertainment Weekly, creator of
shares how he navigated the storyline limitations set by Rebels.
Instead of strictly adhering to the original Star Wars narrative, we’re creatively reinterpreting her rescue scene from the Gold Squadron. In the original series, they delivered a certain speech after rescuing her, and in our version, Danny questions whether he needs to stick to that exact speech. To maintain continuity with the Star Wars Rebels show, we’re subtly altering what transpired in that scene, but we’re making it clear that there’s more to the story about what actually happened.
Instead of just dismissing Mon Mothma’s speech during her escape with Gold Squadron and choosing to overlook it in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, director Gilroy might have intentionally left room for Mon Mothma to deliver her Rebels address after the events unfolding in Andor. After all, nothing seems as it was, yet nothing appears irreparably broken… at least, not this time.
‘Star Wars’ Canon Remains Intact, and ‘Star Wars’ Fans Have Hailed Mon Mothma’s New Speech
As a fan eagerly diving into a universe as vast and iconic as Star Wars or the MCU, I can’t help but feel the weight of expectation on my shoulders. The community is so dedicated that they scrutinize every frame of a movie, hunting down any inconsistency, like spotting a wristwatch peeking out when it shouldn’t be there. They have a keen eye and an even keener memory; any deviation from what they hold as truth will spark lively discussions, if not outright criticism.
To put it another way, fans have widely praised Season 2 of the show “Andor” as one of the top-tier offerings in the expansive “Star Wars” universe, and potentially one of the finest TV series of this millennium. While some thought that it would be challenging to surpass Season 1, the creators have successfully maintained the narrative within the established “Star Wars” lore, delivering a compelling storyline that ranks amongst the best “Star Wars” projects and promises an epic conclusion to one of the most remarkable sagas in “Star Wars” history.
