Remedy CEO Confirmed Control 2’s Budget Is Less Than Alan Wake 2 In New Interview

After the much-anticipated launch of Alan Wake 2, Finnish game developer Remedy Entertainment has returned to work on various projects, rumored to include two updated versions of Max Payne games and a new project called FBC Firebreak. Additionally, they’ve formed a strategic partnership with Annapurna, which could lead to the Alan Wake and Control intellectual properties being utilized in films, television, and potentially other media.

So far, there’s been little information shared about their upcoming game projects, including Control 2, which was officially unveiled in 2022. This project is a collaborative effort between them and 505 Games, with Game Director Mikael Kasurinen hinting that the sequel aims to “develop something fresh” and provide “an innovative and surprising experience” for the player community.

During an interview with Stephen Totilo from Game File, Remedy’s CEO Tero Virtala shared that the production cost for Control 2 is more than their previous project, Alan Wake 2. As reported by Helsingin Sanomat (HS), a Finnish newspaper, Alan Wake 2 allegedly required €70m / $79m to produce, placing it among Finland’s most expensive cultural creations ever made.

Remedy intentionally reduces production costs for Control 2 compared to its previous projects, which is an unusual yet praiseworthy move. This is particularly noteworthy when considering the reported expenses of blockbuster titles like The Last Of Us Part 2 ($220m), Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 ($300m), and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War ($700m) made by their respective developers. According to Virtala, Remedy can produce a “superior” game for €50 million, and he asserts that this budget allows them to create outstanding games. Furthermore, if the game manages to sell two million copies, they will break even on each unit sold.

In his remarks, Virtala stated that having a game of exceptional quality that sells between four to five million copies would make them extremely pleased. Notably, Remedy Entertainment is set to release their upcoming project, FBC Firebreak, a three-player cooperative first-person shooter, which serves as a spin-off from Control. This anticipated title will be available for consoles and PCs on June 17th, 2025.
