Mobius Digital, creators of Outer Wilds, are currently dedicating their efforts towards a brand new project. They hinted at this shift in their development focus by announcing a minor update for Outer Wilds and sharing details about it on Steam.
Initially noted by Rock Paper Shotgun, the studio casually disclosed that it’s focusing more on its upcoming project. They elaborated, for example, that the reason Mobius is distributing minor updates in a staggered manner across platforms is due to the resources necessary for their next game. As the patch notes clarify, “This isn’t a critique of our quality assurance testers; we’re just being overly cautious and economical with the resources we allocate to Outer Wilds as our current project takes precedence!
Mobius Studios previously shared that they won’t be making substantial changes to their previous titles, Outer Wilds and Echoes of the Eye, as they are currently focused on their next project. Occasionally, minor updates might still occur, but it isn’t certain.
There’s no word yet on when we might discover the details of this mysterious new project by Mobius, but that won’t deter fans from guessing what kind of game they might create next. With Outer Wilds receiving critical acclaim in 2019 for its unique blend of cartoonish space-western visuals, intricate puzzles, and catchy space banjo tunes, it leaves us wondering if they’ll bring back an interstellar bluegrass band or explore a different setting altogether.
Mobius Digital is primarily recognized for the creation of Outer Wilds, but they’ve also worked on other projects in the past. Their website mentions two smaller-scale mobile games, Terra Chroma and Beacon 38. If you look closely at images and descriptions of Beacon 38, you might notice some similarities in style or themes that are present in Outer Wilds as well. Mobius Digital completed these projects quite a while ago, making it difficult to play them now; for instance, players have had to join forces to find a playable version of Beacon 38.
