Actor Mads Mikkelsen will portray a condemned chef, opposite Boyd Holbrook, in the film “Last Meals.” Notably, this project will be directed by Ramin Bahrani, who has been nominated for an Oscar (“The White Tiger,” “99 Homes”).
HanWay Films has taken on the revamped project that was initially unveiled in 2022, and they’ll start marketing it during Cannes. The North American distribution rights will be handled by UTA Independent Film Group and Sentient Entertainment.
This upcoming prison drama, scheduled to begin principal filming in Ireland by year’s end, is based on an award-winning screenplay by Justin Piasecki (“Relay”). The story delves into themes of guilt, capital punishment, and redemption, using the medium of exquisite cuisine as its vehicle, specifically focusing on the enigmatic Ortolan – a meal renowned worldwide.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m eagerly anticipating “Last Meals,” where Mads Mikkelsen, the Palme d’Or winner known for films like “Another Round,” “Casino Royale,” and “The Hunt,” takes on the role of Walter Karat. A fallen White House Chef, he now finds himself in a maximum security prison kitchen, preparing meals for death row inmates. On the other side of the serving line, Boyd Holbrook’s character, Jeffrey Reed, a condemned inmate, refuses his meals due to a hunger strike. This persistent rejection infuriates Reed at every turn, and their tension builds until Walter confronts Reed, sparking an unforeseen emotional bond. As Walter becomes convinced of Reed’s innocence, he resolves to uncover the truth behind the man’s conviction.
Occasionally, you encounter a tale that draws you in so deeply that instead of critiquing its flaws, you become engrossed in its characters and atmosphere. This story, while impartial, makes us feel like we are the judges. It showcases ordinary individuals in extraordinary circumstances: dreams lost, hope regained, second chances, and love for the unconventional. ‘Last Meals’ is a story that fits this description perfectly. With an exceptional team of producers, actors, and Ramin at the helm, I can’t help but feel exhilarated about the opportunity to be involved in its creation.
Actress Renee Tab, who has been nominated for both Emmy and Golden Globe awards (for films like “Sound of Freedom,” “Cosmopolis,” and “Maps to the Stars”), will take on the role of packaging the film and serve as producer under Sentient Entertainment. Additionally, Christopher Tuffin, known for his work in shows such as “Alphas” and “Freelance,” from Strong Island, will also join the production team.
The Executive Producers for this project are Charles Porter from Black Bench Productions, Kelly Price from Blessed From Above, Karan Hoss from Hoss Productions, and Jeeny and Michael Miller from Miller Way. Additionally, Mickkelsen, Bahrani, Piasecki, and Holbrook will also serve as Executive Producers. Sentient has teamed up with Todd Slater and Brandon Evans, representing Brick Lane, who will act as the production service company in Ireland. Ari Novack will manage the production. Filming is set to begin this fall in Dublin.
Bahrani, who was nominated for an Oscar in 2021 for best adapted screenplay for “The White Tiger”, found Justin’s script captivating due to its powerful and exhilarating storytelling. He expressed that he had never encountered a movie about a prison chef before, and this distinctive idea served as a starting point. Additionally, it provided him with the chance to work alongside the exceptional Mads Mikkelsen for the first time. Mikkelsen’s talent for infusing soul and complexity into each character is unparalleled.
Tab described ‘Last Meals’ as a profound, multi-sensory journey – a deeply human tale delving into joy, pain, and our intricate bond with food, both as sustenance and power. In the backdrop of the justice system, it offers a thought-provoking, rebellious reflection on dignity and resilience. Ramin, Mads, Justin, and Boyd’s exceptional creativity breathes life into this work, leaving traces reminiscent of The Shawshank Redemption. The end product is an impactful, intimate film that resonates long after the screen fades to black.
2022 saw the debut of the project titled “Last Meals,” initially featuring Delroy Lindo as the lead actor, and British director Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje at the helm. Later on, Samuel L. Jackson joined the cast, with Andrew Levitas taking over the director’s role.
Gabrielle Stewart, CEO of HanWay Films, stated that this award-winning screenplay has found the perfect creative team to meet its full potential. Ramin and Mads have added their unique touch to the story, making us incredibly excited to debut it at Cannes.
