Starbreeze Studios, the developer behind Payday 3, has disclosed they’ve struck a deal with Plaion to obtain publishing rights for the game. This agreement will supposedly speed up their plans for content creation related to Payday 3 and open up more extensive strategic possibilities for the Payday series as a whole.
In order to finalize the agreement, Starbreeze sold $3.4 million worth of new shares, which is equivalent to 10% of its existing share capital. The majority of these funds were allocated towards repaying Plaion according to their previous Payday 3 contract and resolving outstanding debts. Notably, Starbreeze has hinted at future Payday ventures in their announcement, stating that they will collaborate with Plaion on upcoming Payday franchise projects as part of their long-term plan.
After the successful debut of Payday 2, Payday 3 faced a bumpy beginning upon its release in 2023. The game encountered numerous technical problems, struggled with low player counts, and a contentious online-only mandate that was met with disapproval by the Payday community. In 2024, Starbreeze’s CEO Tobias Sjogren departed from the company, and the studio revealed their intention to enhance the game via multiple updates as part of an initiative called Operation: Medic Bag.
Besides Payday, Starbreeze is simultaneously developing a Dungeons & Dragons game for various platforms as well. Details about this game are scant, but it’s anticipated to hit shelves in 2026.
