In Episode 9 of Andor’s second season, Mon Mothma delivers a compelling address to the Galactic Senate. Here’s a breakdown of her speech, its impact on her position within the Rebellion, and why it remains significant in today’s context – as explained by showrunner Tony Gilroy.
In Episodes 7-9 of Andor Season 2, the narrative centers around the tragic event known as the ‘Ghorman Massacre.’ This sequence unfolds the lead-up to this devastating genocide, vividly portraying its execution (including a startling demise), and subsequently reveals how the Empire manipulates propaganda to present themselves as the wronged party following the atrocity.
The narrative of Star Wars significantly fortifies Emperor Palpatine’s control over the galaxy by portraying him powerfully. At the same time, it ignites the spirit of rebellion, but only if the populace is informed about the situation, and that’s where Mon Mothma plays a crucial role.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve uncovered some hard-hitting truths, and with courage in my heart, I decide to stand against the oppressive system in a live-streamed address, hoping it reaches every corner of the gaming world.
Mon Mothma on “the death of truth” in Andor Season 2

The action unfolds within the Galactic Senate, where Bail Organa triggers Article 17-252, granting Motham uninterrupted speech. Seizing this chance, Motham delivers her thoughts eloquently using the following statement:
To my esteemed Senators, comrades, partners, opponents, I present myself to you this morning, burdened by sorrow. For the majority of my life has been spent within these walls. I first entered here as a young one. And gazing around me now, I see that there are few moments, if any, from before my arrival, and only a handful of connections that hold me so dearly.
Over the years, I’ve done my best to represent my gaming community with integrity and adhere to our shared principles. This gaming world is a melting pot of ideas, and we’ve definitely faced challenges in maintaining our cool while chasing our goals. Despite our disagreements, I’m optimistic that my fellow gamers who know me will stand by my trustworthiness as we move forward.
This morning, I find myself in a challenging position to share some concerning news. It seems we’re grappling with a critical situation. The gap between spoken words and reality has grown into a vast chasm. Among all the things at stake, perhaps the most perilous is the erosion of objective reality. The demise of truth represents the triumph of evil in its purest form. When truth departs from us, when we allow it to slip away, when it is torn from our grasp, we expose ourselves to the insatiable hunger of whatever force roars the loudest.
The grip on reality at Ghorman Palace was shattered yesterday. What transpired there… what occurred on Ghorman yesterday, was an unprovoked act of mass slaughter. To put it simply, it was genocide. And that undeniable truth has been banished from this assembly. The beast roaring the loudest, the beast we’ve nurtured, the beast who will soon turn on us all, is Emperor Palpatine.
Andor welcomes Mothma to the Rebellion
Mothma’s discourse is abruptly halted by the Imperial regime, bringing an end to the transmission. However, she has effectively communicated her message, challenging Palpatine’s authority and unveiling his true nature, which places her in serious peril.
As a devoted admirer, I leap into motion, swiftly ushering Mothma beyond the Senate chambers, inviting her into the heart of our Rebellion. Just moments before we bid farewell, I implore Mon with a heavy heart, “Ensure this journey is worth every sacrifice.
As a devoted fan, I’d like to express my admiration for the captivating sequence in Andor. Creator and showrunner Tony Gilroy shares with The Hollywood Reporter that this story maintains its resonance across various time periods. In his words, “The unfortunate reality about this question – one we often encounter – is that peace, prosperity, and tranquility are the exceptions rather than the rule.
These items are extremely uncommon over the past six millennia, dating back to the beginning of written records. If you were to air this program at any time during the past six thousand years, there would be individuals who could understand and relate to the events depicted.
Gilroy elaborates: “Power has always sought to wield the reins of truth. It shapes the storyline, and has consistently aimed to do so… If you trace history back, power is about controlling truth. In my opinion, that’s what we were striving for with that speech – a timeless, classic feel.
