Among the standout features in this year’s Cannes Classics program, unveiled yesterday, are a documentary about Shia LaBeouf’s acting school, a discussion between Quentin Tarantino and George Sherman, a memorial to the late David Lynch, and Mariska Hargitay‘s directorial debut.
The documentary titled ‘Slauson Rec,’ created by Leo Lewis O’Neil, which focuses on Shia LaBeouf’s contentious acting school launched in L.A. in 2018, will be screened with both O’Neil and LaBeouf present. The film has sparked debate, as O’Neil’s latest interview with Vanity Fair disclosed that it features instances of alleged physical abuse by LaBeouf against members of the experimental theater group. In the interview, O’Neil mentioned that he shared a trailer for the project with LaBeouf seeking his approval, and surprisingly, LaBeouf gave his consent.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, LaBeouf explained: “I handed Leo this camera and urged him to express his unique viewpoint and personal journey freely, without any edits. I am well-informed about the documentary and endorse its release. Though my teaching methods might seem unusual to some, I take great pride in the remarkable feats these children have achieved. With their help, we transformed a drama class into a functioning acting company. I wish nothing but success for Leo and everyone involved with The Slauson Rec Company.
In addition to the main events, renowned director Tarantino is scheduled to join a talk about fellow filmmaker Sherman, accompanied by screenings of his movies “Red Canyon” (1949) and “Comanche Territory” (1950). A tribute documentary for David Lynch, titled “David Lynch: Welcome to Hollywood,” will also be shown, with the late director’s son Riley in attendance. The documentary promises to uncover the secret symbolism behind a remarkably consistent body of work and peel back the layers of the enigmatic American Dream.
Mariska Hargitay is set to premiere her first directorial venture, a documentary titled “My Mom Jayne,” in the designated section. This production is a joint effort by HBO and Mighty Entertainment. The film focuses on the life of Hargitay’s mother, Jayne Mansfield, who tragically passed away at the age of 34 in a car accident when Hargitay was merely 3 years old. As per the description, “The documentary chronicles Mariska’s journey to understand and connect with her mother for the first time. Through revealing interviews and an assortment of previously unseen photographs and home movies, she delves into her mother’s public image and private life, uncovering the complexity and depth of Jayne as a person, not just a star, but also to those who were intimately acquainted with her.
Among the notable events are:
– Commemorating Charlie Chaplin’s “Gold Rush” as it turns 100, shown as Cannes’ opening film on May 13th;
– Screening Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s “Amores Perros” (“Love’s a Bitch”) for its 25th anniversary, with the director present;
