Being an avid fan of Alan Tudyk, I’ve relished witnessing a growing recognition for this remarkable actor in recent times. His captivating portrayal of Harry, the alien, in Resident Alien might just be his most unforgettable role thus far. Much like me, many fans were first introduced to him through the iconic sci-fi series Firefly, where he showcased his wit as Hoban “Wash” Washburne, the spaceship pilot.
Upon learning that Alan Tudyk’s latest TV series was a sci-fi comedy, my excitement level soared. Given his comedic prowess, portraying an alien disguised as human appeared tailor-made for him. And when the inaugural season premiered on SyFy in 2021, I found myself validated in my expectations. Despite its widespread appeal among viewers, it’s baffling to me that there are still folks who haven’t jumped on board with this uproariously funny show yet.
5. Harry’s New York Trip
Season 2, Episode 6: “An Alien in New York,” And Episode 7: “Escape From New York”
In the second season of “Resident Alien,” Harry embarks on a fresh quest to discover the hidden life of Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle, the man whose persona he assumed after his spaceship crashed in Patience. His exploration takes him and his most trusted ally and friend, Asta Twelvetrees (Sara Tomko), to New York City, where they decipher a code linked to Harry’s alien tongue throughout the city. The path leads them to an art gallery managed by a woman named Violinda Darvell, who leaves Harry and Asta stunned with her awareness of his true extraterrestrial identity.
As Harry mixes with the crowd at the gallery, one attendant passes him a piece of LSD without his knowledge. Unaware of its effects, he consumes it and starts transforming into his extraterrestrial form. Frightened, he dashes out onto Times Square, causing little alarm among the New Yorkers. Scared by his environment, Harry reaches out to Asta for assistance, exclaiming, “I just witnessed an alien remove its head, and there was a human inside!” Sober or not, Harry can be quite eccentric; however, Harry under the influence of hallucinogens is definitely a bizarre experience.
4. Harry’s First Kiss
Season 1, Episode 4: “Birds of a Feather”
In the series Resident Alien, Max Hawthorne, a 9-year-old boy with an uncommon genetic mutation, is able to see through Harry’s disguise as a human. Initially terrified upon meeting Harry in a doctor’s office, Max flees in fright, causing concern for his parents, Ben and Kate. To help Max accept the reality of the situation, Kate and Ben extend an invitation to Harry for a family dinner. However, Max misunderstands this gesture as a romantic overture, so Harry brings along D’Arcy, Asta’s friend, for support. Unbeknownst to him, D’Arcy assumes that this invitation is actually a date.
Following their meal, Harry escorts D’Arcy to her residence, where she requests a kiss from him. As an extraterrestrial, Harry has no prior experience with kissing, having only witnessed it on television. Nonetheless, he displays self-assurance and leans in for a kiss, extending his tongue first. Unfortunately, this move leaves D’Arcy feeling uncomfortable as Harry licks parts of her face, a moment that seems to last an uncomfortably long duration. After this encounter, she calmly states it wasn’t the “most terrible” kiss she’s ever had, although she ends things with Harry the following day.
3. The Convention
Season 1, Episode 9: “Welcome Aliens”
In the initial scenes of Resident Alien, we see Harry’s spaceship colliding with Earth, causing him to misplace a crucial alien artifact. After a long search on the mountain slope, Harry locates it, but unfortunately, it shatters when he slips through the ice into a deep fissure accompanied by Asta and D’Arcy. Later, Harry confides in Asta about his extraterrestrial nature and explains that he requires alien tracking technology to repair the broken artifact. Inspired, Asta suggests they visit a UFO convention, where some participants claim to have experienced alien abductions.
Harry and Asta traverse through the bustling convention filled with people dressed up as aliens (cosplayers) and so-called UFO experts. As the crowd thickens, Harry expresses his disapproval of the misinformation by murmuring “you know, that’s not quite right” to Asta. He also enjoys sharing little-known facts about extraterrestrials, like the claim that the first astronauts on the moon were secretly possessed by aliens before they came back to Earth. Despite his skepticism, Harry admires the talk given by Giorgio A. Tsoukalos, a well-known internet personality who is an alien enthusiast and plays himself in this specific episode.
2. The 59ers Play
Season 2, Episode 5: “Family Day”
Despite being situated in a remote location, the people of Patience, Colorado, take great pride in their small town and its rich history. So, when Mayor Ben Hawthorne (Levi Fiehler) decides to write and direct the children’s play for the annual Family Day celebration, he views it as a privilege. The play’s narrative revolves around a significant event from the town’s past: In 1884, 59 men bravely entered a collapsing mine in an attempt to save one man. Regrettably, they all perished, but their heroic actions became a cherished legend among the townsfolk. Unfortunately, Ben might have taken his creative control a bit too far.
At the peak of the play, a fierce fight breaks out among the youthful performers, where certain children are depicted as ominous boulders that mercilessly crush the unfortunate miners. This sequence unfolds similarly to the start of “Saving Private Ryan,” featuring graphic violence and dismembered body parts. Although Harry admires the intense acting, the rest of the audience family members recoil in shock as the simulated miner “bodies” accumulate on stage, and Ben suddenly understands he has made a grave error.
1. When Harry Ate 42
Season 2, Episode 6: “An Alien In New York”
In the first season of Resident Alien, it was unveiled that Harry’s extraterrestrial species shares similarities with Earth’s octopuses. This fact was humorously disclosed when Harry telepathically interacted with an octopus in a Japanese restaurant tank, whom he affectionately named “cousin” 42, after the #42 dish – octopus in black bean sauce. Besides providing useful insights about his species and their plans for Earth, 42 also eased Harry’s solitude, as he was the sole other alien on the planet. Later on, Harry would save 42 and keep him in a tank within his cabin.
42, portrayed by Nathan Fillion’s Firefly co-star, met an unfortunate fate when Murphy, Harry’s dog, decided to treat him as a chew toy (octopus). As Harry wept over the dying cephalopod in his arms, 42 expressed his final wish – to be eaten, preferably with butter sauce and a fine Chardonnay. True to his word, Harry prepared 42 according to his friend’s last request, tears streaming down his face as he ate him while “Dearest” by the Bee Gees played in the background. Given 42 was tasty (according to Harry’s reaction in Resident Alien), it seems he went out on a high note.
