Following a two-year hiatus since the fifth and final season of its prequel, Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan’s new series, titled 1923, is set to air in 2025 for its second season. This installment promises numerous perilous endings for several major characters, including Julia Schlaepfer as Alexandra Dutton and Brandon Sklenar as Spencer. However, the storylines were less bleak for Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren’s characters, Jacob and Cara Dutton, leaving room for their possible reappearances in future episodes. But just how likely is that?
It might seem that they found no pleasure in filming “1923,” but that would be an understatement, as both Ford and Mirren found the experience incredibly enjoyable. These top-tier actors participated in a FYC Q&A for the Paramount+ series, an event I believe they wouldn’t have attended if they weren’t fully committed to the Duttons. While Ford expressed his enthusiasm about possibly reprising Jacob for a future “Yellowstone” series, Mirren discussed baby John and the long-awaited sequel-prequel titled “1944,” which was first announced in November 2023.
Harrison Ford On Possibly Returning To Yellowstone-Verse As Jacob Dutton
Although Harrison Ford has played pivotal roles in iconic film series such as Star Wars and Indiana Jones, he isn’t typically associated with multiple sequels. His Jack Ryan films also maintain a level of independence. However, Ford praised the final episode of 1923, calling it “fantastic” and suggesting that it might have one of the most compact scripts he’s worked on in recent years.
With 1944 approaching and no clear indications of when or how Jacob and Cara will meet their ends, there’s a chance that Ford’s former rancher character could live on in the next series as a grandpa. Moreover, it seems unlikely that the actor would refuse to reprise his role. In his own words:
I’m still alive. [If Taylor Sheridan] asks nice. I have no idea what his plans are.
It’s important to speculate that the main creative force behind the franchise, Taylor Sheridan, has a definite plan for the Dutton family saga, and it remains to be seen if it will intertwine directly with the original series. From a practical perspective, I doubt he would want 100-year-old Jacob Dutton appearing in a 1944 setting, but incorporating flashbacks showing how Jacob, Cara, and Spencer reconnected after their lengthy separation could be an excellent decision for the show.
But Helen Mirren’s Thoughts About Baby John Have Me More Curious
Remarkably, the year 1923 concludes on a heartwarming note for Cara Dutton, as she spends her last moments tenderly holding John Dutton II, Spender and Alex’s child. Despite all the conjecture surrounding this baby’s existence, as hinted by the cast during interviews with TopMob, no one revealed any further details during the FYC chat.
However, Mirren seemed quite intrigued by the prospect of 1923 concluding with a blend of youth and age, and I can’t help but ponder if she might be keen on delving into portraying Cara as a mother towards an infant rather than adult children. Here’s her take on it:
As a devoted cinephile, I find it intriguing how the destiny of Yellowstone is placed in the tender hands of an infant, cradled by two elders, who are clearly past their prime. This concept caught my attention and left me eager to see where the story goes next. Furthermore, hearing that Taylor might tackle 1944 for a new project has me excited about exploring yet another generation within this world.
It’s highly likely that the upcoming generation will be strongly influenced by Cara, Jacob Dutton, and even Spencer, considering his death was foreshadowed in the final scenes of “1923”. Introducing 1944 with only Spencer, a new wife, and two unknown children might leave viewers feeling a sense of emptiness or disconnection. Having a familiar face around could help alleviate this, such as Harrison Ford portraying a younger character. However, it’s uncertain if that would be comforting or unsettling. I can’t quite decide.

Paramount Plus offers access to Yellowstone’s spinoffs such as 1883, 1923, Madison, and Rip & Beth follow-ups, along with other streaming originals from Taylor Sheridan. You can choose the Essential plan for $7.99 a month or opt for an ad-free experience and double the catalog by adding Showtime through the Premium plan for $12.99 a month. Or, save a bit with 12 months for the price of 10 when you select the annual plan. Check it out here! Deal Available
It’s worth noting that, technically speaking, the year 1923 hasn’t been officially canceled yet. Therefore, there remains a chance for Season 3 to materialize, offering fans a closer look at Cara and Jacob as they raise John II. However, we’ll need to stay tuned for any announcements from Paramount+ regarding future decisions.
