Ryan Coogler’s film Sinners equips its main characters with various methods of defense against a throng of vampires, drawing on traditional vampire folklore and strict guidelines to adhere to. The narrative of Sinners begins when twins Smoke and Stack (portrayed by Michael B. Jordan) come back to their Mississippi birthplace with the intention of launching a juke joint. Regrettably, on the inaugural night of the club, Remmick’s band of vampires attack them, leaving Smoke, Stack, and their loved ones scrambling to hunker down in the building until dawn breaks.
Waiting for the vampires to enter the building without an invitation might seem straightforward, but Remmick and his group employ a strategy of psychological terror instead. Some members of their adopted family have already been turned into vampires, trying to convince their relatives to undergo the same fate. This persuasion attempts by Remmick’s followers push Grace (Li Jun Li) over her limit, leading her to call out to all the vampires to enter the building, putting her daughter Lisa (Helena Hu) in danger.
Vampires Needing To Be Invited In Connects To Old Vampire Lore
Vampires Hate Garlic, Are Killed By Stakes, & Can’t Enter Buildings Occupied By Humans
Characters portrayed as sinners in some stories incorporate elements of classic vampire lore that are sometimes considered too quirky or outdated for contemporary vampire narratives. For instance, these creatures are said to be repelled by garlic, a trait often perceived as too comical for today’s vampire tales. In their original forms, they turn into ash when exposed to sunlight, are kept at bay by garlic and holy water, can be destroyed by silver or stakes, and require an explicit invitation from the resident to enter a building.
Instead of being secure until dawn, Smoke and company might have been if not for Grace’s justifiable apprehension about shielding Remmick from Lisa. Remmick and his initial two vampire prey attempted to join the festivities, but the twins refused them entry due to their worry for the safety of their predominantly Black attendees. Mary (Hailee Steinfeld) succeeded in obtaining an invitation from Cornbread (Omar Miller) through casual dialogue, however, Cornbread couldn’t repeat this success when the others eventually realized what was happening.
How Annie Knows About Vampires Needing To Be Invited In
Annie Comes Into Sinners’ Story With Vital Mystical Knowledge
In the series “Sinners”, Annie (played by Wunmi Mosaku), who is Stack’s wife, shows a deep understanding of the supernatural, perhaps inherited from her family’s past. Initially, she suspects that Stack and Mary have transformed into malevolent spirits, known as haints in African spiritual beliefs, when they appear to survive fatal wounds. However, when Cornbread cannot enter the building without explicit permission, Annie starts to suspect they might be vampires instead. This discovery of a classic vampire weakness helps these characters decipher their situation in “Sinners” and potentially save at least one of them during the night.
