Missing Negan Moment in ‘Dead City’ Premiere Leaves Fans Wanting More!

heads up: the upcoming episode of The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2, titled “Power Equals Power,” may include some mild spoilers.

The Long-Awaited Return of “The Walking Dead: Dead City”

After a two-year hiatus, “The Walking Dead: Dead City” season 2 premiered last night on AMC, and fans were not left wanting. Starring Lauren Cohan alongside Jeffrey Dean Morgan, this fifth installment in the franchise picks up right where “The Walking Dead” left off in 2022.

In the latest episode, Morgan’s character Negan found himself in a tricky situation upon encountering what some are calling Lucille 2.0. However, he hinted that there were additional elements to that scene which didn’t make it to the final cut, implying that these omissions would have added even more intensity for viewers.

Discussing with the looming deadline, Morgan pointed out the significant transformation Negan has undergone since his initial appearance in 2016, moving from a cold-blooded killer to a complex antihero savior. His former character was marked by his beloved baseball bat, named after his deceased wife, which he had worked tirelessly to let go of. In the episode titled “Power Equals Power,” The Croat (Željko Ivanek) provided him with a new bat; however, he symbolically discarded it on the floor in a show of rebellion. Nevertheless, the storyline could have unfolded quite differently if we had seen the complete scene. As Morgan explained, “It was edited out,” and further added:

It seems he flung the bat across the room because he’s spent years trying to distance himself from Negan, not wanting to be associated with his brutal actions like head-cracking. The bat, Lucille, and his leather coat all bring back memories of Negan for him. He’s been striving to change or at least escape that part of himself he had to become during the apocalypse.

Currently, these individuals are pressuring him to return to his old role, yet he’s resisting this change. By the end of the first season, you observe him attempting to transform and distance himself from that aspect of his past. However, he is now being coerced and blackmailed to revert back to the person he doesn’t wish to be, which presents an interesting challenge for the character he portrays.

Instead of him simply letting go of the bat, which did resolve the situation, it would have been more impactful if Negan had thrown the bat instead. This action might have stirred up emotions he’s been trying to keep hidden. The distinction between dropping and throwing significantly alters our viewpoint, leaving us puzzled as to why this scene was edited out. As the season unfolds, we may uncover the reasons behind this omission.
