Previously at the helm of PlayStation, Shuhei Yoshida hints that gamers might not continue experiencing affordable game prices following Nintendo’s disclosure of $80 for the upcoming Switch 2 titles.
On April 2, 2025, the complete unveiling of the Switch 2 occurred, showcasing several games at its release, including Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, among others.
Following the display of the games, devoted Nintendo enthusiasts observed that Mario Kart World retails at a price of $80, thereby making it the priciest Mario game in history.
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but echo the sentiments shared by the esteemed Shuhei Yoshida, former head of PlayStation. He hinted that we, the gaming community, should brace ourselves for an increase in game prices. This upward trend was inevitable, regardless of whether Nintendo took the lead or not.
Price increases were going to happen “eventually”
During a chat with PlayStation Inside, Yoshida was queried concerning Nintendo’s latest move to increase game prices, such as Mario Kart World.
He mentioned that something like this was bound to occur at some point, perhaps not originating from Nintendo, but it was inevitable eventually. In today’s world, we witness both escalating inflation and growing anticipation for games that are increasingly complex and thus costly to produce, yet still expected to maintain the same price tag. This is a paradox that seems unsolvable.

Modern video games are more sophisticated and technologically complex than they’ve ever been, which means they demand more resources. Naturally, each game’s publisher or manufacturer determines its own price, but ultimately, the fundamental factor is the cost of production.
Immediately following Nintendo unveiling their game prices, there was a surge of people expressing their opinions on social media platforms, particularly those eager for GTA 6, who voiced concerns about potential unfavorable outcomes.
Due to Nintendo’s price hike and earlier speculations about a costlier Grand Theft Auto 6, fans are confident that Rockstar will indeed boost the price of the delayed game.
