Donald Trump expressed concern on his Truth Social account on May 4th, stating that the American movie industry might be declining due to other countries offering attractive incentives to filmmakers and studios, causing productions to move overseas. He also suggested imposing a 100% tariff on foreign movies entering the U.S., claiming it as a matter of national security, although the real concern seems to be that our cities aren’t visually appealing enough for movie production.
It’s well-known that Trump has had a strong interest in Hollywood for some time, but according to Politico, it was actor Jon Voight – one of the president’s representatives in Hollywood – who allegedly came up with the idea for the new tariff. Notably, Voight’s recent films, “Reagan” and “Megalopolis”, were both made and produced within the U.S.
How might the recent changes in policy affect high-profile, expensive summer movies such as “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”, “Jurassic World Rebirth”, “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina”, and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” (or any film with a colon in its title)? It appears that these films could potentially cost twice as much to screen here, so if you think popcorn is pricey now, wait until you see the ticket prices for next year’s IMAX releases. However, the question remains whether this increase will actually revive the struggling movie industry. Coincidentally, during the same week that Trump declared the movie industry was failing, his administration withdrew grants from several non-profit cinemas provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. If these changes lead to fewer iconic landmarks like the London Eye appearing in big-budget movies, it might be a small price to pay considering we’ve never seen Tom Cruise running past the Gateway Arch.
