Marvel Changes ‘Thunderbolts*’ Posters to Reveal the Meaning of That Asterisk — but It’s a Spoiler for the Movie’s Big Reveal

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains major spoilers for “Thunderbolts*,” now playing in theaters.

Marvel Studios isn’t delaying the reveal of “Thunderbolts*” finale; instead, a huge billboard advertising their summer blockbuster in Los Angeles was significantly updated over the weekend during the movie’s debut. The title on the sign transitioned from “Thunderbolts*” to “*The New Avengers” at the end of the opening weekend.

Fans of Marvel movies had been curious for a while about the asterisk in the title “Thunderbolts”. In the third part of the movie, it’s finally explained that Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus) reveals the team’s real name to be the New Avengers. The squad consists of Yelena Belova (portrayed by Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) and Sentry (Lewis Pullman).

In the final moments of “Captain America: Brave New World,” we see that Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) is on a mission to reunite the Avengers. At present, the new team resides in the old Avengers’ headquarters, now known as the Watchtower, and they are embroiled in a lawsuit with Captain America over the misuse of the Avengers logo. The upcoming movie “Avengers: Doomsday” (summer next year) may find the New Avengers joining forces with the original Avengers, along with the Fantastic Four, to thwart a villainous plot masterminded by Robert Downey Jr.’s character.

In a post-credits scene from “Thunderbolts,” the Fantastic Four’s spaceship is seen entering Earth’s orbit from another dimension while their theme music plays. Director Jake Schreier mentioned to EbMaster that the scene was filmed about four weeks ago, and he wasn’t in charge of it; instead, it was the Russos directing on the set of “Avengers: Doomsday.” He found it enjoyable to observe his friends as they stepped up to a larger scale.

He mentioned that everyone involved put effort into ensuring the scene remained true to our characters’ development. Additionally, he pointed out that by moving them into a new environment and setting, we wanted them to adapt accordingly. It was intriguing to observe how they interacted in a fresh context and on a broader scale than before.

The next Marvel movie release is “Fantastic Four: The First Steps,” in theaters July 25.
