The distribution rights for “A Poet” by Simón Mesa Soto, set to debut at Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard section, have been acquired by Epicentre Films before its global premiere. The responsibility of global sales lies with Luxbox.
Daniel Chabannes and Corentin Sénéchal from Epicentre expressed that “A Poet” captured their hearts immediately, as it beautifully blends the essence of poetry with the art of filmmaking.
The story, set in Medellin, Colombia, revolves around Oscar Restrepo, whose love for poetry has failed to bring him recognition. As he grows older and more unpredictable, he embodies the stereotype of the troubled poet. His life takes a turn when he encounters Yurlady, a young girl from humble beginnings, whom he helps nurture her talent. This connection brings some brightness to his existence. However, introducing her into the world of poets might not be the healthiest choice for her.
In Medellin, Colombia, we find a tale centered on Oscar Restrepo, whose devotion to poetry hasn’t earned him any acclaim. As he ages and becomes more erratic, he embodies the common image of the tormented poet. His life takes an unexpected twist with the arrival of Yurlady, a young girl from humble origins, who he helps foster her artistic gifts. This bond adds some light to his days. Yet, drawing her into the world of poets might not be in her best interest.
Mesa Soto’s new film, titled ‘A Poet’, follows his debut work ‘Amparo’. The latter was showcased at Cannes Critics’ Week in 2021 and garnered the Louis Roederer Foundation Rising Star Award for its star, Sandra Melissa Torres.”
Or, if you prefer a more conversational tone:
“After his first film ‘Amparo’, Mesa Soto is now releasing ‘A Poet’. ‘Amparo’ was presented at Cannes Critics’ Week in 2021 and won an award for its actress Sandra Melissa Torres from the Louis Roederer Foundation.
In 2014, his short film “Leidi” and another one from 2016 titled “Mother” both participated at Cannes. Interestingly, “Leidi” was the one that took home the award for Best Short Film – the coveted Palme d’Or in this category.
