In the fourth episode of The Last of Us Season 2, we witness Isaac subjecting a member of the Seraphites, referred to as a Scar, to questioning and physical duress. However, this individual prefers to be recognized by his alternative name, a Seraphite.

In our initial journey through the first season, we encountered some truly unpleasant individuals. Among them were Kathleen and her band of Hunters, marauders, as well as David and his cannibal group based in Salt Lake. As we delve deeper into The Last of Us universe, it’s clear that this world is only getting larger.

During our first season’s travel, we encountered a few unsavory characters such as Kathleen and her group of Hunters, roving bands of raiders, and David with his Salt Lake cannibal gang. It seems that the universe of The Last of Us is growing more complex by the day.

In our initial season’s adventure, we came across some less than desirable individuals like Kathleen and her Hunters crew, marauders, plus David with his Salt Lake cannibal followers. It’s evident that the world depicted in The Last of Us is becoming increasingly diverse.

In Episode 3, there’s a short, sorrowful sequence featuring Abby and her comrades from the Washington Freedom Movement, who encounter a cult. Unfortunately, this encounter ends in tragedy, as later on, Ellie and Dina find the cult members’ bodies.

In the storyline of The Last of Us Part 2, which is the basis for the upcoming series, the characters in question are referred to as Seraphites or more commonly as Scars. They hold significant importance in the unfolding events.

Why Isaac calls the Seraphites “Scars”

The Seraphites got their name, “Scars,” due to the unique facial markings they all possess, particularly on their cheek areas.

In Season 2, we haven’t delved deeply into the ongoing struggle between the Wolves and Scars. Characters like Isaac and his tormented Seraphite hint at a truce that seems to have been breached, but the show hasn’t clarified the reasons behind their hostilities towards each other.

The game reveals that the Seraphites emerged somewhere between 2013 and 2014, with a strong conviction that the Cordyceps infection was a form of divine retribution for human transgressions. Their leader, an enigmatic figure who went by the name of the Prophet (but whose real name is unknown), guided them. Interestingly, while the WLF wield modern weaponry like machine guns, the Seraphites prefer more traditional weapons such as bows and arrows.

Over time, much like how Isaac became disillusioned with FEDRA’s administration of Seattle, the Prophet began to draw followers who were disgruntled with the government’s treatment (and this included the Seraphites who frequently teetered on the edge of hunger).

Following the seizure of Seattle by the WLF, tensions escalated between the two factions. The Seraphites sought to expand within the city, reportedly causing fear among its inhabitants. As a result, they withdrew to a suburb that had been isolated due to years of flooding.

Instead of fostering peace, the Seraphites opted to mobilize an army against the WLF. To enlist in their infantry, soldiers underwent a unique initiation ceremony that involved carving a Glasgow-style scar into their cheeks. Notably, every Seraphite shares this distinctive facial mark, regardless of age.

Beyond some background details I won’t delve into for now, as they might surface later in the series, let me give you the gist: Following the Prophet’s demise, the situation deteriorated significantly. However, a truce was eventually reached. The Seraphites pledged to refrain from interfering with WLF supply lines and patrols, while the Wolves swore to keep their distance from them.

In Episode 3, the Seraphites who were killed might hold greater significance than one might initially assume: it could have been those deaths that ultimately shattered the peace agreement.
