Last week, I was taken aback when I realized that Cynthia was a crucial piece in the puzzle for season 16. Little did I know how accurate my words would be. Tonight, she performs miracles, resuscitating an episode that was on the verge of collapse following the Nashville trip. Much like Annaleise Keating desperately reviving Bonnie Winterbottom, Cynthia, in her role as Bravo’s fairy godmother of chaos, manages to keep the storylines of a promising season afloat while the main cast recovers from their post-Nashville shock.
After the events of “Pistol-gate” and Porsha’s chaotic birthday party, each woman withdraws to their separate spaces in Atlanta, revisiting personal narratives that have been present since the premiere. This pause seems a bit repetitive, potentially slowing the pace the season had gained following Kenaya. In this episode, Shamea moves forward in selecting a surrogate for her baby boy; Kelli hosts a playful birthday party for her dog; Porsha introduces a new au pair and continues discussions with Dennis; however, fortunately, Drew, another housewife with a fame-hungry ex, didn’t have any solo scenes, reducing the number of potentially problematic situations.
The over-the-top family dynamics of Brit continue to disrupt the season’s flow, as they seem to escalate for the cameras, with only her grandma managing to calm things down. The storyline begins with the family packing up Brit’s mom’s house in preparation for its sale and Brit moving in with her daughter. Despite the tension following the Kenya incident, Brit appears closer than ever to her sisters, although it remains difficult to understand the root of the conflict among the three women. Brit hints at selling her business and marrying Mike as potential sources of contention, along with her sisters’ personal issues. However, given Brit’s history of being an unreliable narrator – a woman who once threatened to use a gun because Kenya didn’t give her a tight enough hug – it’s clear that there is more to the story than what we see tonight. The sisterly feud seems deep-rooted, and I’m sure there are numerous years of drama waiting to be uncovered from various perspectives and truths, but this episode barely scratches the surface.
In summary, what we’re witnessing is a staged portrayal of past disputes among family members, tailored for an unseen audience via cameras. It’s important to note that their conflicts are genuine, but the presentation feels reminiscent of an outdated style seen in early Keeping up with the Kardashians, focusing on intergenerational strife. Brit’s sister, Cher, is on the brink of breakdown throughout, sobbing because her mother has discarded her late father’s liquor (he passed away a decade ago). She lashes out, “How could you give all his things away?” to which the mother retorts, “How could he leave me?”. Cher exclaims, “He’s dead!” while Brit responds in a monotone tone, “Cher, please!”. Drew might need acting lessons. The rest of the family is seen crying over the phone with the third sister, Tierra, who declined participation and appears to be shopping instead. At least she’s making sensible choices!
In simpler terms, without Cynthia’s involvement, the episode might have been dull, but she isn’t going to let this season of RHOA flounder – she brings out her classic peach outfit and begins filming with all groups of the cast to ensure the gossip in Nashville stays exciting. A long-time Housewife understands that something as tantalizing as this shouldn’t be left untouched until the next gathering! If no one else will take on the role of unofficial scriptwriter (I believe that role is essential and it seems like Angela carries most of the plot development), Cynthia will do it instead!
In her personal reflection, she compares handling her situation to solving a mystery. She starts by having dinner with Shamea and Kelli, gathering information from potential witnesses. Then, she visits Porsha and Angela to hear their perspectives. Shamea discloses some details about Brit’s role in the discussion regarding Charles’s rumored other child, while Kelli reveals a damaging quote from Porsha about The Enforcer that is later echoed during Cynthia’s conversation with Angela. Shamea also shares fresh gossip that deepens her conflict with Angela. After their encounter in Nashville, Shamea receives an extended response from Angela via text, which was edited by production due to its length. Angela’s message contained phrases like “phony sisterhood” and “it’s evident our principles and beliefs are not compatible,” before concluding with a blessing. In essence, Angela sets clear boundaries with Porsha’s bodyguard.
In wrapping up her probe, Cynthia sits down for a private chat with Porsha. As might be expected, this conversation lacks any trace of responsibility. Porsha, known for her ability to weave tales seamlessly in the moment, claims she can’t recall making certain statements and insists she would never engage in infidelity (a chuckle here). Later on, Porsha is seen with her mother and sister, still crafting a tale more appealing than reality. She acknowledges phoning Angela but leaves out any mention of Charles from the discussion.
Contrastingly, Angela finds herself compelled to disclose the details of her Nashville trip. Following a workout, she shares the incident with her husband, initially protective of Porsha based on rumors. Angela advises him to keep following Porsha’s storyline, before revealing that this is the same woman who claimed she could sleep with Charles herself. Charles remains unruffled, more focused on watching Angela stand up for his honor, smirking as he requests a ticket to join that confrontation. It seems Cynthia would be the ideal candidate to organize the boxing match, given her involvement throughout the episode.
Cynthia skillfully transforms the episode, turning it from a mere two-star rating into something extraordinary, thanks to the unique influence of the annual Bailey-que event. She suggests moving the celebration for Juneteenth earlier than usual (it’s typically held on the Fourth of July), but many suspect it’s more about salvaging a production in need of a miracle. The picturesque Lake Bailey provides an ideal setting for the first gathering since the trip, evoking nostalgia reminiscent of old episodes of Real Housewives of Atlanta while serving as a backdrop for entertaining clashes between the newcomers and established cast members. Cynthia invites a spiritual guide to this event – rest assured, it’s not the sensational prophet from season thirteen; instead, it’s Tash, who is an “intuitive life strategist.” I may not understand the specifics of her role, but as long as she stirs up drama like any occultist on a Bravo show, I’m content.
Prophet Tash isn’t like Alison from the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills or Scott from the Real Housewives of Orange County, but she doesn’t hesitate to jump into action, assessing the women’s emotions. She advises Brit to concentrate on her business and encourages Kelli to make the most of her new beginning after divorce (the number of suggestive photos she took that night suggests she heeded the prophet’s advice). However, things become complicated when she advises Angela to maintain passion in her marriage. Darkly, Prophet Tash hints at Charles possibly desiring a Porsche, likely referring to a new car, but Shamea seizes the moment and flees, asking the prophet to clarify if he’s interested in a Porsche or Porsha. As expected, Porsha arrives at Lake Bailey with Drew close behind (Drew’s request for a private reading had me laughing; she can be quite dramatic).
In Cynthia’s well-known living room, gathered together, Brit nudges Angela about the accuracy of the prophet’s readings. Although Angela was already on guard, particularly concerning Charles, it is Brit whose reaction seems misplaced in this situation. When Angela queries why the tension revolves around her reading, Brit starts shouting rudely. The spirit within Cynthia’s couches, which houses the essence of Bailey-ques past, stirs up a back-and-forth between an impulsive Brit and quick-witted Angela. Eventually, Angela makes a joke about Brit’s “large mouth with telltale marks,” followed by her commenting on its extensive use. What a relief! Whether this remark was meant as a dig at the controversial photos, at Brit talking too much, or a delightful play on words, I find it amusing.
The situation becomes quite intense – Brit blurts out a remark about a baby, which Kelli repeats loudly and humorously as if it was never said, causing a stir. To diffuse the tension, referee Cynthia introduces a spontaneous trivia question about Juneteenth, demonstrating her dedication to Black history. Though she can be quite matronly, I admire her efforts. Following this educational interlude, Cynthia switches back to her producer role and takes Angela aside for a private discussion to settle disagreements between Porsha and Shamea. Porsha initiates the conversation first, trying to save face while Angela calls her out on her actions. They exchange polite yet passive-aggressive apologies, promising to move forward with fresh perspectives.
Afterward, Cynthia introduces Shamea, who questions the intense text argument. Angela justifiably scolds Shamea for laughing and letting Porsha belittle Charles when she should have intervened. However, Shamea tries to downplay her part in it as a joke, but they manage to reconcile. Great job, Cynthia Bailey! We conclude with a sneak peek of the mid-season, hinting at Phaedra’s comeback, the deterioration of Shamea and Porsha’s friendship, and a conflict between Brit and Kelli… It’s clear that season sixteen promises more drama ahead!
Peach Tea To-Go
Occasionally, it crosses my mind if Dennis and Porsha are truly meant for each other, given their shared talent for twisting reality. For instance, when Dennis claims he randomly dropped by the studio as Drew arrived with cameras, implying he didn’t agree to terms, allow entry for the crew, or attach a microphone to himself – it’s the kind of deception Porsha thrives on. I’m glad she reached the decision that her child is fathered by an aspiring Househusband, as I suspect this dance will continue for quite some time between them.
Despite Charles appearing unfazed by being drawn into the drama tonight, based on the mid-season preview, this is merely the beginning of a much larger storyline! The trailer alone has me optimistic that these initial season setbacks are paving the way for something fantastic. The newcomers seem to be hitting their stride, and it appears as though Porsha might embrace her villainous side more fully while filming with Ralph, potentially marking the start of her villain era.
