Isaac’s Shocking Betrayal: The Real Reason He Turned on FEDRA in The Last of Us S2 E4

In the fourth episode of Season 2, fans encountered Jeffrey Wright as Isaac Dixon, a character who left an immediate impact through his contentious actions. Notably, this is not Wright’s first time portraying Isaac; he previously brought the WLF leader to life in Naughty Dog’s video game, The Last of Us Part 2. Excited fans have long anticipated seeing Isaac in The Last of Us, especially since they learned that new scenes featuring him were created specifically for this series and weren’t initially part of the second game.

In Episode 4 of The Last of Us Season 2, the story lived up to expectations. It continued with Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey, and Dina, portrayed by Isabela Merced, as they ventured into the combat-ridden cityscape of Seattle, where they encountered two opposing factions: the Washington Liberation Front (often referred to as Abby’s group) and the enigmatic, faith-based Seraphites.

What Happens to Isaac in The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 4

Warning – This article contains spoilers for The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 4.

The fourth episode of The Last of Us Season 2 commences with a vehicle carrying FEDRA soldiers navigating the Seattle Quarantine Zone in 2018 (a decade prior to the current timeline). One soldier shares a tale, revealing that they brutally attacked an individual labeled as a “voter” for spreading information, which prompts laughter and applause from their comrades.

In a fresh scenario, a newly-enlisted FEDRA solider named Burton (Ben Ahlers) ponders aloud about the term ‘voters’ being used for the citizens. At this moment, Isaac, who leads the patrol, steps forward and identifies himself.

Since we deprived them of the ability to vote, they were derisively referred to as non-voters.

Following this incident, the truck encounters a barricaded route, causing the crowd to congregate on the street. The FEDRA troops start to feel uneasy, but Isaac instructs them to remain where they are as he approaches the gathering—an action that goes against standard procedure. He takes Burton along with him.

A lady named Alanna Ubach approaches them on the sidewalk and inquires, “Is that you, Isaac?” To which he responds affirmatively, then queries, “And you, Hanrahan?” She acknowledges this as well.

Afterward, Isaac spins around and strides back toward the truck. With a composed demeanor, he detaches two grenades, hurls them into the vehicle occupied by soldiers, and shuts the door. The explosion follows, claiming the lives of everyone inside. Remarkably, the driver manages to flee, but Isaac swiftly takes aim and eliminates him. Later, he reunites with Hanrahan who extends a handshake and remarks, “You’re now part of the struggle.“.

Burton watches all this in horror, until Isaac turns to him and says, “Now make your choice.”

Why Isaac Betrayed FEDRA and Teamed Up With Hanrahan, Explained

In this scene, even long-time gamers and newbies to “The Last of Us” found it intriguing. Isaac’s past is wrapped up in secrecy, but Episode 4 discloses that he was previously a soldier from FEDRA, the organization he now leads against.

As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, it’s been evident throughout this gripping series that FEDRA hasn’t exactly been everyone’s favorite authority in the post-apocalyptic world. This disdain has sparked numerous rebellions and conflicts, some of which we witnessed during Season 1 – the Fireflies’ uprising in Boston, and Kathleen’s (Melanie Lynskey) faction overthrowing FEDRA in Kansas City.

In the heart of the movie, I found myself witnessing a pivotal moment between Isaac and another character that hinted at a stirring unrest akin to an uprising in Seattle. The cruel handling and contempt shown by FEDRA towards citizens within the Quarantine Zone was starkly illustrated through a soldier’s narrative about the suppression of voters, leaving no doubt that it deeply troubled Isaac.

Isaac, in all probability, has seen or perhaps even participated in numerous instances similar to the one the soldier was recounting, where FEDRA soldiers exhibited unnecessary cruelty towards their governed citizens. This experience seems to have fueled Isaac’s resolve to ally with Hanrahan, a decision that reflects his intense dislike for his own group and his yearning for change. He subsequently chose to become part of the WLF revolution.

As the episode unfolds, it is revealed that Isaac’s desire was fulfilled; he has assumed the harsh role as the head of the WLF. However, this position brings about a fresh conflict – a war against the religious group known as the Seraphites.
