The recently released horror film titled “Clown in a Cornfield” has been generating intriguing discussions among critics beyond its quirky mood and excessive violence. This film premiered at the SXSW festival this year and is scheduled to hit theaters nationwide on May 9. Despite early screenings, it’s clear that this latest “killer clown” production has struck a chord with critics. Currently, it boasts a commendable 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, an impressive score for a slasher horror movie.
The movie titled “Clown in a Cornfield” is adapted from Adam Cesare’s novel with the same name, which was awarded the 2020 Bram Stoker Award for Best Young Adult Novel. Directed by Eli Craig and co-written with Carter Blanchard, it features stars like Katie Douglas, Aaron Abrams, Carson MacCormac, Will Sasso, and Kevin Durand. Distribution is handled by RLJE Films and Shudder, suggesting that “Clown in a Cornfield” might premiere on the horror-dedicated streaming platform at some point in the future.
In this spin on horror-comedy, the protagonist, Quinn Maybrook, a teenage girl, relocates with her father to the seemingly ordinary town of Kettle Springs. As she settles in and makes new acquaintances, an unsettling event occurs during a local festival: Frendo the Clown, the town mascot, graces the scene, but he’s not your typical jester with balloons and smiles. Instead, he takes pleasure in slicing up mischievous teens. However, be prepared for Clown in a Cornfield to offer an unconventional take on the usual “clowns are sinister” genre.
“We Don’t Have Any Clown Mass Slashers Other Than Michael at the Very Beginning of ‘Halloween'”
Reporters at ScreenRant had a chance to chat with Cesare and Craig during the New York City premiere of their film. They shared the sources behind their work, with Cesare explaining that his inspiration for the book series came from his affection for slasher films, while Craig revealed what inspired him in making the movie.
I’m really fond of horror movies with a slasher theme. To be honest, I found myself wondering: what would a clown-themed slasher character look like? There aren’t too many examples of this type of villain beyond the more obvious ones, and as far as I know, there are no iconic clown mass murderers like Michael Myers in Halloween other than at its very beginning.
In other words, imagine a clown with depressive tendencies, from an academic perspective this could lead to a horror movie concept, correct?
Craig shared his ideas on bringing Cesare’s chilling image to life on the movie screen. The filmmaker, known for his horror-comedy productions like “Tucker & Dale vs. Evil” and “Little Evil,” expressed inspiration from the unsettling picture of a spooky clown standing before a cornfield.
Absolutely, I find the color scheme quite appealing, especially when it comes to depicting a clown amidst a green cornfield. The combination seems intentional and well-balanced. In fact, if you watch the movie carefully, there are instances where a clown is hidden so subtly that you almost miss it. You might find yourself paused at one frame, surprised to spot a hint of red hair peeking out from behind a corn stalk. It’s quite unsettling.
