Donald Trump used Truth Social on Sunday to declare that he’s giving permission for the Department of Commerce and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative to apply a 100% tax on any films originating from outside the country.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I recently found myself reflecting on the U.S. movie industry‘s future amidst concerns raised by Donald Trump. He categorized foreign productions as potential threats to our national security, arguing that they lure filmmakers away from our shores and subtly inject messaging and propaganda into American cinemas.
Trump tweeted, “The American Movie Industry is rapidly declining. Other countries are enticing our filmmakers and studios to leave the U.S., causing destruction in Hollywood and other regions. This is a deliberate strategy by foreign nations, posing a threat to our national security. It’s also about messaging and propaganda! So, I am instructing the Department of Commerce and the United States Trade Representative to immediately initiate the process of imposing a 100% tariff on all movies produced overseas and shown in our country. We want American-made movies back!
